you'll only be sued if by some miracle your story blows up enough that the people in question catches wind of it--and even then they will almost definitely not give a damn unless they're Samuel L Jackson--or if you are earning revenue from the story.

So do what you want, it will almost definitely not matter and even if you do get sued all you have to do is stop the story or even delete it. But thats all a very unlikely ordeal anyway as i been saying. You arent in any real danger of losing all your life savings, my man.

I would suggest to keep the real-world issues out of the story. It works for Royal Road. Did you ever heard of the Royal Road admin falling out of the window after a mysterious contact with polonium?

Alternate history should be OK most of the time.
A major factor would be the time period you want it to take place. If it's very recent and you have people show up that are still alive or have close relatives, that's when you might want to tread carefully with how these people are portrayed.
