Yo. I need help....

I'm currently planning a 'low' fantasy Isekai where the power system is about manipulating existing particles. Basically, there are fire, ice, and other particles in the atmosphere, and people can form them into 'spells' using Mana or Spiritual Energy.

Now, I'm wondering how much sense this really makes. I thought that in this world, there would already be formed particles, like normal water in a sea or earth, but how much sense does that really make? And which kind of elemetens could be manipulated? For example, I wanted to keep "higher" laws like Fate/Time/Creation and so on out of it, but would it make sense to manipulate gravity?

While there's not a lot there yet, I will say that having the elements existing as particles makes more sense than making magic happen from nothing. So, you're off to a good start.

Probably shouldn’t ask me, I just drowned a kingdom. :meowsip:

At least the worlds weren’t sent to ruin this time. :blobsip:

If it is low fantasy, my best bet would be. Those particles acting as elements, might come from maybe some kind of source.

Maybe an object or something.

Hm. It was more like that it exists everywhere, just more or less on another "plane" In some cases, there are already formed and brought to reality though mana or something like this.

Hmm…in a case like this. Might have to do some serious world lore.

You know how religions, folk lore and so on have their origins?

How they believe in all sorts of things. This also includes how elements are.

I guess an example might be, how from maybe a folk lore or something. They were granted the use of fire, but could not control it until it was contained in some kind of object.

The mana was too much, but through years of research and refinement. They manage to create a way to use it more efficiently, but also created like cursed objects that allows for the capability to rage a war.

Instead of worrying so much about "sense", I'd try to think about what are the needs of your story, and how various "system" ideas will affect the world, the plot, and the characters. It's unwise to fall into the world building trap (he said from experience), tempting though it may be.

Yes Gravity makes since and also it really makes since you have people mixing particles to make like ice and warm wind to dry your hair haha, nice things and also a little help with that I can share and Suggest ideas I would love to share:D. I will also say that There's a show that has similar concepts but with Super Tinny Invisible to most people Nanites that turn into elements. Maybe you can get some Inspiration from that~:).

I'd say read up on the Roman mythical elements. May also search 'Roman world elements' (Earth, water, air, fire).

There's also Chinese Taoist elements you can read about(Earth, water, air, fire, metal). Often used in Feng Shui. So there's a whole system of use to read about.

Japanese is kinda similar to Chinese, but metal is swapped out for wood.

The three also have a creation myths about them, so I think it's worth the research for inspiration.

I've seen three different takes on Japanese elements, all have five:
Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Void (The elements used in Taijutsu/Ninjutsu - each also corresponding to a finger of the hand)
Wood, Metal, Air, Water, Fire (same as Chinese)
One that was more esoteric and aligned with versions of the Shinto gods before Buddhism and Taoism "infected" it that I'm blanking on - believe it included Light, Dark, Storm, Nature and one I'm blanking on but it's been about 40 years since I read about that one (I think in the same book I learned the version of the ninja).
