My mother is a teacher. Or well, used to be cuz she is the vice principal now.

On 17th July, she has her exam for qualifying to be a principal.

So, she decided to show me what an ideal student is like.
She took a leave from work till 17th.

Her strat was simple, study all the time and sleep when you are tired. No games, no phones, no fun. Just nap whenever you are tired.

Needless to say she broke down day 2 from stress, and couldn't do anything that day because of migraines and everything.

And on day 3 she got bored of studying.
Said there is nothing left to do, she has studied everything.

So, she gave a mock test, and scored horribly.

Her reason being the test had questions she didn't study for...

So now she has given up on studying, saying she will study when the exam is closer.

I see this as proof video games are good for relieving stress, which leads to students studying more efficiently. Or your mother is bad at memorizing stuff. Either is possible.

One way to make studying good is by making studying interesting.

I kid you not, the only reason why I pass my math test in college in the past is by watching a video of idiots doing a math quiz which I basically rant on their idiocy to the point I took out my phone and began to solve it on my own. What I didn't expect that one of the questions i got in the test was one of the questions I was solving which I easily put my answer without question and it was actually one question my teacher didn't expect me to solve that quickly.

She asked me how did I solve that question that fast which I basically lied about it through studying since I'm sure as hell she won't believe that I solved it through ranting my answers on a video.

Passing a lot of tests now days is more on knowing how to take a test, than actually knowing the correct answer. That said you need to know enough about the subject to actually pass obviously. But knowing how to take a test can give you anywhere up to 25% on the test.

You guys know I'm a public-school teacher, and to pass my licensure exam before (required for every teacher working in government), I studied the topics that are expected to come out of the tests. The same was applied when I took my bar exams.

However, what I did is not to cram the test items inside my head. My technique was to read and understand the principle, then apply/connect it to real life situations. I love it whenever I solve the problems of people around me everytime I use the things/concepts I learned in educ and law.

Works every time, even in my classroom. My students love my subject, and how I teach them things. Although, to my students I would also crack jokes.

So yeah, what I'm saying is that, people will have meaningful learning when they're having fun in what they do, and they know the purpose of why they're learning it.

Extra question: Did I try taking the principal's exam in my country? My superiors say I should, but I refused.

Being a principal here is extra work, and I got a lot of responsibilities in my hands already.

Besides, I love teaching in the field more than sitting in an air-conditioned office and dealing with the 'formal' adults. It's boring.

Tell her to study in little parts at a time through chunking, which are little study sessions of 10-15 minutes per day. Morning is good time to study, b/c you're not tired during the morning. Then review in the evening after dinner. We call this study method "chunking." Tell her to not overwhelm herself with so much studying, b/c she'll get burnout or boredom. What she said she'd do closer to the exam is called "cramming," which most students who procrastinate on studying do. Don't let her do that! What she needs to do is review, review, review!

People may need different strategies to fit different personality types, and personalities can change as we age.

Personally, I didn't study for most classes, except that one viticulture class that was supposed to be fun but was mostly memorization. For most classes, I simply read the textbook cover-to-cover throughout the term, absorbing the information at my own pace but not looking back to go over it again. That worked for me. I attended all classes, took notes that I typically didn't review later, and never worried about midterms or finals, just kept scantrons and bluebooks on me at all times just in case. When I walked into class and had difficulty finding a seat, I'd secretly roll my eyes at all the people who only showed up for tests.

Works unless you're parents are the model Asian family.
Unless your parents are already tenured college professors, which means their unlucky kid must pass with flying colors or get disowned. Dun dun DUN!

i never liked studying in general.

i prefer if all my learning came from fun stuff like video games, or if they could make learning it fun.

it's surprisingly educational.

I don't know why, but for some reason, that your mother had to have an exam to become a principal is just a shock to me.
