This is my second attempt at the scene. Please vote and explain why you prefer the one you do. Any constructive criticism and/or suggestions is appreciated. So are your thoughts on the drawings.

I love the atmosphere on the second cover, but the first one has a better shape, although not big enough to be catchy. Imo, I think you should mix both of them!

I think the second looks more dynamic, but yes the fruit do look less ornate for lack of a better term. Personally I don’t think the lighting I did was effective and might have to remove that layer. Unfortunately it is the same layer the bird and the blue lines are on. Don’t think I that I should continue iterating today unless my migraine fades…

I thought it was veins; if it's lighting, maybe you can add the glowy effect like the fruits but more subtle :blob_hide:
Thought I was big brain by doing gradient lighting then erasing the areas around the arm and bird and manually filling it in with opaque version of the color of the bird and fruit. But, at the end it just looks weird…

This is the image without the layer. The hand is based on me trying to draw my own, using it as reference.

would you at least *try* taking pictures of a human hand?
what do you have to lose. use all kinds of different lighting, angles, distance, everything.

when you see the right composition, just pick it out and post that.
again. what do you have to lose here.
cell phone pics have better resolution that people realize.

I did essentially trace my hand in that pose yes. I just over embellished the tendons and the wrist, while removing the hair. Next time I will make the tendons more opaque.

Yeah, the hand proportion is nicer than the previous one, but I prefer wonky hands, wabi sabi: beauty in imperfection. And the opaque color isn't weird; it's a plus to build the atmosphere, but of course you can improve it.

I am probably just gonna make it less complex with one light source. And will also put the bird on its own layer.

@ElijahRyne :
will you. for *me*. Just to give me something to PLAY with...
pretty please with sugar on top.
take pictures of a human hand, and pick one out you like the light and composition.
post it.
let me *play* with GIMP-fu, see what I can come up with.
you might like it. I could make it look like an oil painting, or maybe a charcoal sketch.
try it. its free, no AI gets used.

artistic integrity for taking a picture
artistic integrity for nothing but human digital manipulation
my crystal ball says, you;re all about writer integrity. Call it a hunch.

you can pick a couple stock images for the bird for me to try to integrate.

Here is the image of my hand I traced. Had to put it on a canvas to reduce size however.

yeah.

don't take this the wrong way, guy.
but you're not going to get a lot of offers to be a hand model in the wristwatch catalogs.
I can see the blob hand, was realism. you traced it accurately.

use someone else's hand, no offense. Someone you can see veins and tendons and stuff.
I liked the "holding a flower out" motif, just my thing.

wanna see some titling?
Untitled(6).jpg

for a mock up... is that pretentious looking enough for what you had in mind? lol
I was gonna add a tiny sub-titling "... that writes and quickly moves away"
and, "from award winning novelist" above your name

why stop there. One of those "puff lines" up top, because why not.

I tried drawing after seeing yours. Take a look.

One thick pencil, one dusty eraser, no sharpener 🙃
I didn’t think I could draw this good.
It’s night here, so low lighting.

I really like the idea going on here. Imo the position of the stem coming out from the side is a little awkward and the arm pose of the first version makes a better composition compared to the new version.

If you want to keep the new version, then I'd move the arm up a bit, make the fruit bigger and set the bird lower to make better use of the space and apply the rule of thirds.

I just can’t draw the other hand pose, but I agree it is better imo. I might be able to shift the arm and bird by moving the layers tho.

Indeed, the other pose is harder to draw.

is the fruit draining something or is it the accumulation of life energy? :blob_reach:

It is the proof of Magic’s existence. The starting delusion that spurs one to meditation on illusion craft. The key to the world. Long story short the protagonist wakes up with that below his wrist, but no one else can see it. As he stares at it, the world goes dim and a silhouette of a bird drinks from the fruits blood. It is then that they begin to learn illusion craft/magic. As mentioned in the earlier post I am working on another story before this one.

Cool concept! It sparks ideas for me to make up a fictional disease.
