So reddit and quora has already clarify most of it for me:

Extra-Sensory-Perception er: someone with the ability to access more than just the conventional senses like sight or smell.

Mutant: someone whose gene pool is abnormal enough to either get an extra toe or gain the ability to fire off gamma radiation, or be like the above case.

Why I decided to post is because I feel that Legendary Mechanic is doing a stupid by separating the two classes.

Psychic -> people with mind power, might include telekinesis but mostly it is mental screams and hypnosis.

Mutant -> a grabbag of random shit. From a dude that shoots lasers out of his eyes to the main enemy with Gene Steal.

I understand that ESPer is a subset of mutants, but is there really a need to separate them into two distinct classes?

It depends on how they got their power in the first place. A mutant would be someone whose genes mutated to be different from the ones their parents possess. A psychic could have gotten the power from their parents or from a piece of technology or through intense training.

You may want to post this in NU forum since legendary mechanic is there, if you already did, then just ignore this message.
That being said, people differentiate between the body and mind a lot despite them being basically the same. So perhaps it's just to show a difference between "I can lift shit with my brain" and "I can shoot bullets out of my fingers".

....Look buddy, some mutants might be Psychic, but not every Psychic is going to be a mutant. Are you going to call a Koala a human just because it so happens to have an opposable thumb?

I feel like it is more like nen categories. (Emitter, Transmuter, enhancer, conjurer, manipulator, and specialization.)
Maybe there are groups of similar powers. Psychics, Enhanced bodies, etc.

There are psychics, but there may be people with enhanced strength, people who can buff/debuff others, people with supper regen, people who fire lasers from their eyes, etc. clearly there is not just psychics. Yet, if the author only writes of psychics, or if all strong people are psychics, I do see the point of just calling everyone psychics…

I have not and will not read Legendary Mechanic. However, Mutant and Psychic are two different things. If they are similar enough to be 'the same' then that's a failure on the part of the author.

Since you used the word Class, I'm assuming LitRPG.
If you have a Mutant Class, I'm envisioning someone, not necessarily born any different from 'normal', who can mutate their body at certain levels or milestones in their class. Like in MonsterLit stories.
A mutant may be able to gain the ESP gene, but that doesn't make them a Psychic immediately, either. Maybe they don't have the money to develop their newfound talent, or maybe they're too superstitious to try. Or maybe they just ignored it in favor of more suitable genes, like 'Regeneration'.
Having said that, they could (probably) multiclass into Psychic now that they have the gene.

On the other hand, a Psychic could feasibly not even have a mutation of any sort. Maybe humans are naturally born with the ESP gene, or maybe the character is a different species that is born with it. They could also get it from an implant, from faith(like a Jedi), or through magical means.
Additionally, the Psychic Class might offer abilities and skills that the Mutant Class just doesn't get.

To make a comparison, the difference between the Mutant Class and the Psychic Class is similar to the difference between, say, the Arcane Trickster Rogue, and the Conjuration Wizard. Both get access to the Magic Hand spell, but the classes are still completely distinct despite that common ground.

In the novel, the mutants gain their power because of their awakened X gene. I have no idea how psychics get their power, only that there is an entire race of psychic aliens. I don't even know how the common people get them.

I know the venn diagram thing and how U should not overgeneralize, but it pisses me off that the author can clarify pugilist class, magicians and mechanics but not these two.

That is the fun part, it is not that clear for me from the novel. There is no clear cut between the two and the only differentiation is just "mutants can do shit with their body and psychics with their mind!" If a mutant gets the ESP gene, is he a ESPer or mutant? They are suppose to be a clear distinction, but just like the author's precious work, none is given.
