Could be worse. You could have been beaten into a coma and have progressive memory loss and have no memory of your mother even as you remember being in the room by her death bed. Not forgotten, but deleted. You can see the gap where she is supposed to be, but all memories were erased along with every feeling and emotion.

At least seeing her name makes you feel something, instead of a detached nothingness.

Is that a strangely specific example? It seems strangely specific to me.
