Memory recollection using mana

I have an idea of magical power of being able to recall past memories using mana, and the clearer and longer the past memories were, the more mana will be used up.

The user could remember nearly everything he wants, and it's possible to remember hazy and obscure memory with the increased mana usage. The more the memory were visited, the less the mana usage will be.

its possible for Reincarnated MC to perfectly remember their past life memories to remember all the technology and advancement, and also visit their old memories too, at the increased mana cost of course. It may not be possible to remember some hazy past memories with one attempt, and user need to revisit it again until the mana cost is reduces, therefore making it balanced.

i think this power would make sense for stories that involves MC using past life memories to advance the technology of their new world.

ive been wondering in why those character could successfully make anything within the new world with just "memory", "wit", and past life memory without enduring major hurdle, when I'm still quite troubled in building lots of stuff and learning skills even after watching YouTube tutorial or even direct course teaching with instructor.

And of course, the limitations is the range of their memory. You can't remember something that never happened.

What do you think about it ?

So "Scence Recollection" from porn games as a non-porn power. Sounds way too overpowered and abuseable even with the restrictions.

"Wow, what a coincidence that I remember exessively reading about X in my last life, let me just look up how it worked for a day instead of the normal 2 seconds and solve that problem"

But at least it would "explain" why some random teen has the blueprints of a nuclear power plant in his head, along with whatever else is needed for the plot.

I'd break the memories down so much MC'd need to trial and error their way to the solution. Which can and in most cases should happen offscreen unless it's interesting to read, imo.

From WoD game setting, they had to variants of the power. Past Life and Dream.

Dream was from 1 to 5 and you could once per scene tap into the Akashic Record of the collected unconscious of humanity and give yourself a skill of your choice. Under the system you would roll the base attribute and a skill to achieve something. 2 being average human, 5 being amazing.

Past life was, you had the ability to contact past lives, so instead of a flat skill, you rolled it against a target number of 8 and every success gave you a level of usefulness. So you would request someone like, Ed, my uncle the Railroad worker, and for every success you got two dice to use for anything that past life might know about. so three successes gave you a flat 6 dice to know about railroads, swing hammers, how to drive a train, where the railroads are located.

You could keep rolling until you botched (Natural 1s remove a success) so if you get negative successes, you are fucked.

Dream was more stable, but you could only use it once. Past life was far more random, but with a willpower spent for an auto success, and maybe some modifiers to reduce difficulties, it was possible to explode your skillpool to an insane level with past life. (Note the background underwent several different variations as the game went through various editions.)

Just mentioning the two methods used from a game perspective.

I'm actually including something similar to this in the book I'm writing. The main character has the ability to recall pretty much anything he's read. It probably would have been overpowered if he had read bothered to read up on topics like survival or plant identification, but he was a specialist so he mostly read history books. That and a lot of smut.

Giving him a lot of book knowledge without practical experience though gives me opportunities to demonstrate where things can go wrong when you have one without the other.
