You can. Kings bestowed titles like that all the time to knights or even commoners who earned it through accomplishments in wars and stuf. Sometimes gave them land too.

Sesshomaru is also the first born son of some OP demon, so he must got lands of his own he just doesnt do anything with. Lol didnt he have some imp as a servant? The lil dude had a pretty powerful staff or something, if I recall right. Could shoot fireballs

I mainly meant in the simplified anime warring states context. Where samurai serve land owning lord's or were warlords themselves and conquered land.

All he got from his old man was a sword. Sesshomaru was mainly interested in ruling and conquest till he mellowed out later with Rin. So he has land, as his pride would prevent him from giving it up.
