In-story, I want the mc to be the reverse Song Shuhang, and cultivate much slower than his or her peers. And not be particularly outstanding. I have never seen something like this in a cultivation novel.

Because it would be boring. 99% of people don't want to read about Average Joe and his non-adventures. Reading hundreds of chapters of Young AJ just sitting there, trying to do what his peers already accomplished and simply not getting the mantras right because he has a few reading comprehension problems.

Cuz it is a power fantasy shit.

Not that there aren't CN authors trying. It is just so shit. To hell, even the ones that said slow life, cultivation via hardwork ended up having the biggest BS superpower cheat; plot armor.

If you define cultivation as the method to use better qi and being immortal, then my mc had very slow cultivation.

However, if you define cultivation as how strong she is, then no it is not applicable to my mc situation.

Being strong and having high cultivation are not synonym in my fic.

I mean, that's only really true if you focus on the Cultivation as the main theme.

I think you can tell a fun and interesting story but still have the MC progress slowly. They can still have trials and tribulations, face down their rivals and spirit beasts and what not - it just means that when they do it'll be for stakes that are comparatively smaller.

I am trying to write something in that vein about a character who is below-average and doing my best to avoid any real sense of 'cheats' or sudden boosts - fair warning it is a BL (although we're nearly 15 chapters in publically and no romance has started because the characters are too young).

There is a novel called "Virtuous cultivation" that I just remembered and it, in fact, had an mc who was not talented or diligent or overpowered in any way

Read the synopsis. As of chapter 25 the MC has below average talent even compared to the other mob characters and only cultivated to the second realm because of pills. It's actually been more focused on literal cultivation(agriculture), but seems to be shifting focus on a plot point I won't spoil.

You can also try "Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality", haven't read past the doctor part but I've been told his breakthroughs were pretty slow paced compared to other popular Xianxias.

SELF-PROMOTION INCOMING!

Also I wrote one chapter as a proof of concept for a story with an MC with an abysmally low cultivation speed and relatively low strength compared to her peers, like, to the point she's about to die and still in the first major realm.Though uh, it's gonna involve manipulation of teenagers and their probable deaths as she gets more desperate to extend her lifespan. Pretty dark so wouldn't really compare it to CCG, probably won't even be motivated enough to continue writing it.

You could try my story out. It includes an MC who starts his journey very tragically. He is basically a tarnished child left with seemingly no purpose. He is also a member of the lowest Family called the Elias Family—people from this Family are regarded as "Acolytes". A term one is referred to if existing in the lowest echelon of he Holy Church.
