Hey all, so as the title says, I'm looking for german media to really delve into the german language. I work best by diving in head first, so now that my german is approximately equivalent to that of a preschooler, I'm looking for some good media to dive into.

to clarify, while I appreciate (and will look into) books and foreign apps, I'm primarily looking for stories on SH and WP, if possible. And preferably original german, not translated to german if at all possible. I want to get a sense for german pop culture and colloquial sentence structure.

Bitte und danke. Tschüss!

Why are you choosing to study German books, out of all German media forms

Anyway, if you are going to read German books, maybe try the series of Rubinrot. It's supposed to be good, not my place to judge though. If it's about apps... Well, I don't know if I can recommend Wattpad. And what do you mean with SH? Aren't languages other than English forbidden from being posted?
Other than that, I'm sure I have a few stories on there, but I doubt you would want to read that. Wattpad Germany isn't, like... great, you know? I think, Wattpad in general isn't very great. :blob_frown:

I missed an S lol. my bad :sweating_profusely: but anyhow, I'll look into Rubinrot. And I wasn't sure if SH allowed other languages or not. It's 3AM right now and when I posted it I just had some vague recollection of seeing translations mentioned. and what do you mean wattpad germany isn't that great? like not a lot of options, or more like the slums of the already slummy wattpad?
I already recommended the app readfy, which is both free and full to the brim with German books, but he didn't seem to like it. That is where I get my books from.
I am looking into it and I do appreciate the idea. I reposted here as technically what I was looking for was more of "reader" thing than an author thing. I'm just so used to going to the author forum.
Viel Glück.

Yeah, it's not allowed here, sorry. :blob_cookie:
Uh, well, yeah, basically both. I haven't seen much on there thar I would be calling something worth reading. I think you could find gems, but you would have to dig through dirt to find it. There's the quintessential Wattpad story, that is the gift that keeps on giving. One was inspired by the former and the next inspired by the one, they are all samey and what doesn't fit hardly ever gets that type of attention, so it's hard to find. And since there's a lot of other options (Belletristica, FanFiktion.de, Bookrix.de, etc) people look to publish their stuff somewhere else, depending on the type of story.

I don't understand the desire to read internet fiction instead of established authors. I heard Stefan Zweig and Thomas Mann were beginner friendly.

the fact that right now my wallet is pert near empty, and online fiction rarely has a price-tag attached. I am interested in books eventually. but, at least in english, internet fiction tends to have more pop-culture references as well.

I don't really understand what the issue is. The stuff that was written over a century ago is in public domain (you could otherwise pirate). Anyway, classics are always accessible. On gutenberg.org for example.

books over a century ago don't have modern cultural references. it'd be like a native german speaker reading century old american lit and thinking it's still culturally relevant.

seeing as my ultimate goal is to visit germany, i'd like to have a modern take that wasn't pushed through a publisher - thus self-published webnovels. someone above recommended Belletristica and i've found it quite helpful for what i'm looking for. beyond that, people can list off countless english webnovels for whatever niche, but i have yet to see anyone name a single specific example of german webnovels (the closest was you when you mentioned Stefan Sweigg or Thomas Mann, which are currently on my list.

additionally, I despise pirating. as a writer myself, I refuse to take part in something that would be detrimental to myself if done to me.
