If you don't mind throwing money at the problem, you should check out John Stovall's books on kindle, like Elf Empire, The Dungeon of Stories, or City of Masks.

My Her Beasts story is a reverse harem shifter romance with city / kingdom building. The world is weird as the number of people are small and those in charge of each city are considered royalty. If you enjoy the premise of my story, whether my writing is to your tastes or not, you might consider checking out other beastworld novels like "Wolf Hubby XOXO", "Beauty & The Beasts", or "When Beauty Meets Beasts". They all have primitive worlds with MCs that reinvent technology and manage a city / kingdom to some extent. Also, yes, reverse harems #WhyChoose style.

Does world-building count? If so, I think I know a pretty interesting one that has about 45 chapters posted ??

It's a good one but more politic and army focused

What do you think compromises a good kingdom building story? You are often against the usual things this site does, so some random webnovels might not cut it either.

Hmm, mine might work for you, though it doesn't start out as one. It's a Living Dungeon story and it is slowly developing into more. But to make sure that you are not disappointed: The kingdom-building process won't really be 'finished' at the time the story concludes. Once the major antagonist is dealt with, a lot of things become simply a matter of time, there's not enough challenge left to keep going with this story and it will be time to wrap a few things up.

On the other hand, we will be seeing them again in several of my other planned stories set in the same world. So I'll be able to 'check in' with their progress over time by having other characters visit the dungeon.

You're everywhere! Reddit, RoyalRoad, here... Granted, I guess I am too if I keep running into you. ?

Might I suggest an epilogue in the main story? It's a great way to show off growth, if time is the problem. Your idea sounds fun too, though!

I am planning some epilogues, but I need to be careful with them so I only tease parts of future stories and don't spoil anything. Example: Some of the young characters in Core will be older and in more central roles in another story, so I can't say too much about them. But certainly, there are aspects of the dungeon to small kingdom growth that I can, and will, include in the epilogues.

On Amazon I've found Elf Empire and Rise of the Ancient Magus. There's also a couple of cultivator tree books there that have nation or clan building elements.

If you’re looking for the Kingdom Building genre, then this story is a perfect fit. It tells the tale of the main character, Alice Vasilissa, who builds her own kingdom called Greater Azaroth.

Not only does she establish her own kingdom, but Alice also aims to become a goddess within it, worshipped by her people. With an expansive world-building aspect, this story is even more highly recommended.
