Is it a custom to thank someone for following you?

Hi, I just recently received some followers for my first story on this site. It's nice, but I saw comments on their profile with other people thanking them for following. Do I reply back with great sincerity because they followed me?

Do what you think you have to do. If you wanted to thank them then just show up there and say thank you. If you don't want to then don't. You shouldn't be pressured by such things and do what seems to be normal to you. Like I said earlier, do what you think you have to do. It's okay to be yourself and do what you want. They thanked the ones that followed them because those are their true feelings. If you feel the same way then you also can thank them. Thanking them is not an obligation, it's what they wanted and you can also do that feeling the same way as them. So the answer is no, it isn't a custom

I, as a reader, don't see a reason to? I mean if you put out a work that I like enough to follow you it feels like a mutual understanding kinda thing.
But to be fair if you feel like it you can, if you don't want to then don't. I don't really think someone is going to get hurt to much from not doing or doing it.

No real custom, just a personal decision. If I ever wrote a story online, which is unlikely, because I am covetous of my ownership rights to my work, I wouldn't acknowledge my audience too much. Not because I would be unappreciative of their enjoyment and support; I simply don't write for an audience. If I write it is for the sake of art, and my own soul. I don't mind if I get any audience at all. But if I do, I'm glad what I write moves people.
It really is a matter of preference, and what your personal goals are.
