I was talking to a older gentleman that grew up in Ukraine and he has a lot of stories about growing up in the USSR. I mentioned that I saw a youtube video about how in the 60s the USSR had better computers than the west, but then fell behind. They didn't make enough vacuum tubes and when it came time to switch to transistors they were way late.

He told me that the soviet cleanrooms had lasers that would zap particles to keep them off the wafers. I got to thinking, what was it like working in the seminconductor industry in the USSR? But there is not much information I can find with some quick searches.
