Hello enby pals, gals and guys.
I summon the power of the forum dweller's to aid me in my quest.
I need a way to portray sassy character as not so annoying like I see a lot of creators make.
They think being a dick means quirky or sassy little fun character I want a way to make them fun, but keep up the sass in a loving manner.
Any advice would be appreciated.

When they jab or tease the other characters, they do it out of love and care. They do it to have fun and to cheer others up. Now that’s the good sassy.

On the other hand, a character who’s very arrogant and see anyone else as lower than themself. They jab or make fun of others to boost their own ego. They do it to put others down, so they themself can feel superior. Now that’s an unlikable character.

See the difference? A good sassy and likable character does care about others. They don’t need to talk down to others to make themself feel superior.

That’s what a loser do. And you and I know, that’s not very likable.

Make them be mindful of other characters. Maybe one character isnt okay with receiveing friendly jabs, while another is generally okay except for one specific thing that sets them off, etc. The sassy character should respect that. It would also help to have a dynamic where one character can match the sass, so then you can have some fun banter

I would say use a very common tactic that is employed in the real world subconsciously by many people. Testing the boundaries. Don't crank sass to 11 from the beginning have the character probe others with weaker stuff and see who reciprocates/shrugs off/gets annoyed and when. And then keep it at that level for each separate character.

That way you can easily portray that despite their sass they do pay attention to others and are not just an asshole. And when said character hits another that can bounce back the sass - let the word fight begin and unleash their true might only then and there.

Sass is fun. Sass is spicy, tingly-hot, and sparkly and it gets the brain revving in a rather mischievous gear. A relatively safe way to write sass is to bash at common inconveniences or threats in life, something like

"Yes of course it's raining, we hit our sunshine quota this week."

The more you point your character's sass at other characters, the more you have to worry about the characters involved, their sensibilities, and, to a lesser extent, the sensibilities of your audience (as in the IRL audience). That latter one is more negotiable though especially if your world operates using differing cultures (in which case, awesome, play around with that!)

A very safe method of being sassy is to diss yourself. It only really becomes a problem if the sassy character sasses themself over something a character within earshot is having genuine problems with. (We audience members otoh can shove it. I'm not about to lose my shit if a cis woman mouths off about how awful being a woman is, for example. This despite me, you know, being a woman.)

If you're in combat with another character, then you're already trying to kill each other so being a jackass or not is a moot point. Feel free to go for maximum insults there. (Or if you must be more realistic, ditch the sass and focus only on killkillkillmaimmaimmaimsurvivesurvivesurvive, but I like combat banter so shush)

I agree with everyone here about respecting boundaries, and if you need a trashy JRPG way to go about it, imagine Sass like a spell, that costs SP. The more SP you put into it, the sassier you are, basically. Each character has their own... SR, or Sass Resistance. The goal of your Sassy Character (SC) is to throw as much sass (SP) at characters as possible, but not going over their SR. The finer detailing of this abstraction is irrelevant, just as long as you have an idea how everything works and puts together. Also don't use this idiom verbatim unless you're in an isekai or people are going to wonder what the fuck you're talking about because levels aren't actual tangible constructs. You have been warned ;)
