After spending the past seven minutes learning how to put spoiler tags in these posts, I can post my idea.

As always, I would always like first opnions from any and everyone. I already wrote a few chapters in advance. And I plan to go through with this one unlike said others that are gathering dust in digital space. I'll mention the tags so anyone with certain preferences can walk away. After falling into the smut, harem trap of writing a story, I don't mind it but I see now that one is enough and that I want to try something more action/story-focused.

I just want to know if the first chapter is a good enough hook or there is anything to improve or anything lacking in character.

Wielder Academy, Library

[Skill: Bond, Level: 1]

[Skill description: Devote yourself to your one for eternity; with a shared life, your last breath will be theirs and vice versa. For such a price, your souls, forever linked, can share all abilities and skills.]

“Same as always.”

It was a Saturday, and Kyle was currently in the library for the hundredth time since the academy’s skill bestowal. Around him was a plethora of books all detailing monster biology, skills, and potential.

Like those who were blessed with mana, he was summoned to ascend the Titans Rift, one of the many towers left behind by the Titans who formed the world. A hundred floors of mystery and challenges were made to create warriors capable of fighting back against the dragons locked at the top.

Beings that see themselves above all else.

‘I can’t go any higher than the sixth floor on my own.’

Around him were descriptions of monsters he had encountered.

No one wanted to form a bond with him, and rightfully so, as climbing the tower came with the chance of death, and none would put their lives in his hands, as many would rather flee to live another day, amongst other reasons. He had no outstanding potential but ranked in tenth place in the entrance exam, which garnered him some fame.

But that didn’t last long, not many wanted to sponsor him, and those who did restrict his freedom with their offers. So instead of joining any recognised academy, he joined the Open Wielders Academy.

Academies were built for each of the towers, some held in higher regard than others, offering to properly tutor and help climbers in the conquest to clear them.

His choice was the safest, as they offered no restrictions on him and were located close to a tower, the Emerald Fury. With only seventy-nine floors conquered and regarded as the safest tower to climb.

Here he was able to study their monster encyclopaedias, which helped in deciding the path he will walk, bonding with a monster or a beast.

In his climb to the seventh floor, he came across many monsters, from bats to giant larvae, apes, slimes, pig-faced humanoid orcs, wolves, and amphibian frogs.

The Emerald Fury tower held the green dragon of nature, its purpose to rid all sentient life that took resources from the planet greedily, which included the titans. A noble cause but one taken to the extreme, every floor of the tower was a forest of some kind.

Dragons unable to free themselves from their prison spent the time locked within tampering with the tower, messing with its challenges to kill all who climb to end their lives. Empowering the monsters and beasts within.

But that only made Kyle's job easier, as monsters within the tower would hold more potential than those outside.

Everything he learnt he jotted down in his notebook, the pros and cons of the monsters he’s encountered as well as their future potential. comparing those created by the tower and those outside.

Kyle even delved into an evolution guide to form a path to strength.

He wanted a bond that, with effort, would make him stand out and rise above others. And he wanted to find one as soon as possible, not wanting to lag.

‘Alright, process of elimination: Orcs are out. Don’t like the idea of having a pig-faced monster, personal preference.’

Amphibians, though interesting, were eliminated as well; there was little known about their evolution lines, and he didn’t think being able to spill his guts about it to be useful.

A beast companion didn’t sound so bad to him; after all, he would have enhanced senses and other abilities, more so if it was an elemental-type fox or wolf.

And then there was the weird option. It had potential but was rather weak. The slime.

Slimes were considered cannon fodder easily found on every floor; they were a random creation of mana, a single-celled organism with little to no consciousness. But they had skills that made him consider them.

Slime clones, multiple cores, producing slime, tendrils, and their many evolution variants are one he favoured more than the beast options.

However, the slimes at his level could only consume, spit acid, and create slime tendrils, nothing like his imagination was pushing forward.

‘Still, evolution for them is simple enough,’ he hummed, looking through his notes.

Not every slime evolution was recorded, however. Evolutions such as blood and mimic slimes were unknown, and alchemy slimes were possible and could open various paths for him but required a vast amount of resources.

‘Magma, cryo, aquatic, lightning, fire, earth, and metal slimes were great options. Yes, some have their downsides, and some evolutions are difficult to achieve, but not all of them.’

“But riding a wolf in battle sounds very cool.” He smirked at the image of him riding a profound beast tearing through a massive army.

But the big, giant elephant in the room screamed; his life was in danger with a bond, and it worked to solidify his choice.

“Slime it is.” Kyle huffed, gathering his notes.

‘I can’t afford to have a bond that’ll die easily, sliced, minced, and blown to bits. With a slime, I can store its core and have it use a sub-core to keep itself safe.’

Kyle didn’t know if that would work, but regardless, he knew slimes developed fall cores to act as their main one for survival. And in the end, that’s what all this amounted to: survival.

Cleaning the table and sorting the books, he left the library; the evening sun struck his face as he walked down the student dorms.

Along the way, he ran into a group of three guys. The middle one, the leader, a man with dark red hair, grinned, spotting him, and with a suave attitude, walked up to him.

“Yo Kyle, how’s it going, mate!” He smiled, wrapping his arms tightly around him.

Kyle’s face scrunched, ‘Of course he’s drinking.’

Kyle forced himself out of his grip, trying to walk away only for the other two to block his path.

“Well, that’s not nice, buddy. Why the cold shoulder? Still upset no one wants to be your little forever after?” He snorted.

Tension rose to Kyle’s shoulders before he slumped, “Heh, yeah, I’m thinking of trying to tame a wolf. Don’t you think that’d be cool, Joven?” He gave a fake smile facing him.

Joven’s hazy grey eyes sobered up for a moment before bursting into laughter; the two behind Kyle also snickered, copying their boss.

“Oh man, that’s beautiful, a bitch getting a bitch. I almost feel bad for you, but hey, you deserve this.”

Kyle chuckled but said nothing. "Still pissy about coming behind a commoner? How fragile can an ego be?’

“What's so funny, bitch?”

“Nothing.”

“Oh really?” Joven walked up closer, gripping Kyle by the shoulder; he winced, feeling the touch burn, “Cuz it felt like you were making fun of me.”

Kyle clenched his teeth, forcing a smile; he wouldn’t give in to Joven.

“Nah man, it’s getting late. We should probably get going, right, guys? Don’t want to waste your time here.” Kyle chuckled, still bearing with the burning sensation.

Joven let out a snort before shoving Kyle back. “Let's go.” He grunted, walking aside, “You won’t last here for much longer anyways.”

The other two walked past Kyle, shoving him aside. Once out of earshot, Kyle breathed out and went off the path, slumping down with his back against a tree.

He winced, clutching his shoulder; it hurt like a burn normally would.

‘It wouldn’t even leave a mark on my black ass anyways.’ Kyle huffed, getting up.

Wielder Academy, Fourth Star Dorms

The way back to the dorm building was uneventful; entering the building, he scanned his card and made his way up to the higher floors. The academy had a reward system for students in every 250 rank; he was originally in the first star dorm.

And it was as luxurious as you can imagine: free training equipment, access to information and items locked behind certain walls, and free trainers to help improve one's ability. Free food every day. And every academy class was optional.

But in this dorm, the rooms were mediocre and on the smaller side, nothing to complain about, but aside from that, there was no benefit.

Now in his room, he sat down; his phone buzzed, and he saw the call incoming from his father. He took a deep breath and answered it.

“Hey Dad, how's it going?” Kyle smiled.

It was a video call, and through the screen a much older man sharing the same crimson eyes smiled back.

“Haha, how's my champ doing!”

“Heh, I’m doing fine, Dad, same as always, better in some areas.”

His father hummed, “That’s good to hear. I’m glad you picked up. It’s been a while… had me worried there.” he said with a chuckle.

Kyle’s smile faltered; it was true he had been avoiding calling home, especially when death was possible in the tower.

“I’m sorry I’ve been focusing, preparing myself… How’s Jean doing?” Kyle asked, sitting down on a chair, he put the phone aside, angling it to still show himself.

“Jean’s been doing well; sometimes it’s like I’m raising you all over again.” He chuckled, “He’s in bed right now.”

Kyle nodded; a small silence took over before his father spoke up, “So, have you found anyone to help with your skill yet?”

“No, I don’t think anyone will, and I’ve got a plan, and before you say anything, I’m not rushing anything. The time I spent was to properly plan things out.”

“Hah, looks like you learnt a thing or two.”

“All I learnt is to pray for Jean when he’s old enough to learn from your great talks.” Kyle comically shivered.

“Who do you think you're talking to, boy? It's because of my talks you’re the man you are today, and you’ve made your mistakes in high school, while Jean’s been doing well so far.”

“Uh-huh. Well, thanks for calling me Dad. Honestly, I would’ve forgotten to call you back for a while.”

“Then use your brain, son; remember there are people who miss you.”

‘Still can’t escape a speech,’ Kyle smiled.

“I know, Dad. I’ll reach out tomorrow before I follow through with my plan. Love you, Dad.”

“Me too, son, and please don’t forget to reach out.”

With that, the call ended, and now he was back in his room. Alone.

There was nothing left for him to do besides shower, sleep, and prepare for tomorrow.

Wielder Academy, The Emerald Fury Tower

Kyle was prepared; he donned his gear, reinforced black leather armour with an iron chest piece, gauntlets, and greaves. Strapped to his back was a red spear with a black blade.

Stepping into the over-present tower, he marched up the staircase. From the outside, it looked like a tower that stretched to infinity, stopping at a bed of clouds; he marched through the dark entrance.

Cold winds entered his veins, the world turned upside down, and soon enough he felt mana wash over him.

[Registered Challenger, Good luck in clearing the tower!]

As always, the same prompt overtook his mind and the next second he landed on the grassy floor.

Like always, he rose, peering over the grassy plains with little trees; behind him was a massive glowing crystal.

Not wasting any time, he touched it, and another prompt filled his vision.

[Which floor would you like to ascend to?]

‘Fifth.’ He poured his energy into the crystal and felt himself being tugged away.

In the blink of an eye, he was in a forest, instead of grassy plains.

He drew his spear and began marching, his feet snapping twigs. The wind of the forest bustling, he kept his senses open, and then he heard it.

A low thud; facing the direction of the sound, he saw a green slime hopping towards him from a distance. It stopped sending his presence.

‘Move!’ Kyle kicked off running towards the slime, each step snapping the twigs beneath him.

The slime bulged Before spewing blasts of green slime, Kyle tensed, drawing from his mana; his speed increased, and he swung horizontally with his spear, remembering he was surrounded by trees and not to mess up.

He slashed the acid spit in half and three more that came after; getting close, he poured more mana into his muscles.

The slime bounced before dashing with explosive speed!

‘!’ Kyle stabbed his spear into the ground, pole vaulting over the slime. It dashed past, slamming into a tree, losing some of its slime in the process.

As Kyle landed, he opened his palm and felt a drain from him; his mana leaked out, swirling into a ball, and he launched it at the slime.

As it unstuck itself from the tree, Kyles's mana blast exploded in contact, launching slime everywhere.

‘Still alive… and I can’t see its core.’ He frowned.

It’s lost half its mass since the explosion but still hopped towards him; with a deep breath, Kyle cycled his mana once more, doubling his physical abilities, and charged.

He unleashed two small mana blasts; as they closed the distance, he brought his spear down, slashing its body in half and stabbing it into the ground.

‘I didn’t hit the core; it’s already reconnecting.’

He recovered and swung again but felt no resistance, and once more, grunting, he poured mana into his spear, setting the flame ablaze as he prepared to swing again; the green slime’s body expanded rapidly, aiming to consume him whole.

His view was covered; its slime mass shadowed him, ready to swallow him whole.

In that moment Kyle reacted; mana flared, and a thin layer of blue miasma covered his body. ‘Expand.’

With his mental command, the bubble surrounding him grew into a three-meter barrier as the slime-covered it whole, blocking all points of escape.

‘Either I go through the act or…’ On his left, he saw a darker shade of green. Kyle thrust his spear in that direction, and he felt it stab through its core.

The slime sizzled, its mass sliding down his barrier; he killed it. Cancelling the barrier, he drew back what mana he could.

“It was good but not strong.”

Kyle looked around before kneeling to grab the shattered pieces of its core. He watched as part of its slime sizzled into black smoke.

Every monster in the tower was created by the tower’s magic; it was the most advanced and barely understood process. At times, when killed, they vanish, but oftentimes part of them remains, or even rarer, something is found in place of the corpse known as Items, gifts from the tower as acknowledgement of one's achievement.

The leftover slime and monster core were proof of that. But getting drops was harder the higher up one went.

“If you are watching everything we do, then give me what I want, and I’ll clear you.” He said aloud, hoping there was some truth to the tower being sentient in dropping items to challengers.

Because the monster he planned to tame wasn’t going to be an ordinary slime, it was going to be the boss of this floor.

It's average, like everything else in the genre. You should pour more soul into the story telling and the characters backgrounds and their interactions rather than just that they have powers, hunt monsters, and grow stronger. You must add these elements as a part of the world rahter than creating a world for these things to happen, because it ends up shallow.
The resumed info dump at the beginning also felt a bit boring. You should start a novel narrating something that is happening, perhaps something intense, rather than him staring at a skill while the narrator tells me the reason why there are skills to begin with. This is just but a couple of things I had thought while reading half of this, I couldnt really read the rest as it got quite generic.
Maybe four years ago this would have been fine but after the market is so saturated with the same exact stories like yours, you have to put a bit more attention to detail for it to feel more interesting. For more examples of what I am trying to tell you, just read any popular LitRPG story in Rotal Road.
