Soooooo. After I found out that people are translating my story without my permission I kind of went eh. And then went over to being pissed after I realized one person is making money off it.
I don't like people taking my story without my permission to translate it (not planning to start a discussion about this topic :blob_no:) so I'd kind of like having an overview.
What do you do to protect your stories? Which are common sites to check for illegal translations? :blob_teary:

I know that this site has a bad reputation with translations.

Maybe DMCA takedowns are an option if everything else fails.

Well, unless you've got some money in your hands to sue or DMCA the whole thing OR ask the site itself to take the story down, all you can do is launch your own boycott or at least ask for a cut from the translation.

No one can translate my stories if I translated it first. Or if it doesn't exists. I haven't published anything noteworthy yet. Otherwise, I did nothing.

I think SH need anti right click and ctrl. It won't completely make people stop copying and translating our story, but at least it made them harder than ctrl c+v.

Tony's stance was it annoys the crap out of readers and stuff, and bots can still easily go and copy the work, so he doesn't plan to do that.

yeah the Russians translated one of my novels as well, and their version actually has comments and stuff ^_^

my one beef is that they could not translate one of the teacher's names which was Miss sandstrom.... in their translated version they called her Miss sandstorm -_-

Ha, some guy actually translates my story there. To think that I'd be famous enough for someone to do it. :s_tongue:

I mean I write my story for fun in the first place, so if I found out someone was translating it- even if they were making money off of it, I would actually be kinda flattered. I certainly wouldn't be mad, because at the end of the day it means more people around the world would be reading and enjoying my story.

Tell them they can translate my story instead. It's fanfiction, so it's not like I can make money on it anyway.

Pretty much how I view it as well. But there’s also a certain point before I call my lawyer, you know?

I wish somebody would translate my story, and/or steal it, and then finish writing it. However, I don't know if I could bring myself to read my own story if somebody else finished it.

It actually depends if u really want to do dat.

Lets see.
1st of all u could do simple and just contact the translator with "hew, i no like u translate ma work stahp". It works sometimes actually.
2nd even if they try to make money out of it they most likely no have much as readers in dat kind of pirate site r not really willing to pay.
3rd even if so and so it actually can bring some new readers. As all the random pirate translations tend to be slower dan actual release there are readers who would be interested and will find where the original english is to read there till the end already.(same was with me as i didnt know any english sites and was just reading on some russian stuff where i could find until there i found myself on NU and SH).

So ugg, mostly it is better to deal with it. After all its a translation that brings u new readers from other countries rather dat just literal copy-paste on some other site to get views.

if they translated my story, they'd be looking for trouble since it contains lot of lolis in lewd scenarios xD

iirc they hate gay stories as well, so it's double protection for me.

my author name alone also reeks of banned stuff, so baby a triple.

Write a warning in you next chapter post that you don’t like it and prefer them to stop, if they still do it, well there is always the option of delaying the next release to agitate an angry mob of readers...

talking directly to the translator is still the best and first option you should consider since nobody likes a dmca takedown notice in their email.

If they are honest, they would consider sharing revenue with you.

So, as an "illegal translator" myself (translating chinese stuff to english once, then later on just editing other people's translation), I have to say that I don't think I'm that confident in my chinese speaking capabilities to actually converse with the author. I was doing MTL after all ^^°. Personally, if I had made significant money off that translation, then I'd contact the author. But especially with chinese websites they are locked behind contracts and stuff (fuck qidian on that note), so I can only ask them to ignore me >.<

I wouldn't mind it myself if I was contacted beforehand and I got a cut. It sounds pretty interesting tbh.

Out of curiosity how did you find out your story got translated? Would love to know if my story is translated as well (although the chances is highly unlikely)
