The character I'm writing is an Expy of Jin Mazama from Join the Pack! Seton Academy. Jin might be the most unlikable MC I've ever seen and the reason for being racist is stupid as hell.
  • For an animal expert, he stupidly tried to fight bears with an icicle to protect a wolf girl
  • Holding a grudge against the wolf girl he tried saving for treating his wounds
  • His nasty personality to animals not involved in any way with the incident
  • His creepy, possessive tendencies toward Hitomi
The expy is similar except people call him out on his shitty attitude and using his backstory for sympathy points (The expy's case, picking a fight against five polar bear beastmen with a pocket knife, to protect a Grey Wolf kemonomimi that was being mugged. He blames the Grey Wolf for getting mugged in the first place, refusing to take responsible for his actions). Any tips of how I can deconstruct this character?

I mean...there is no need to.

If this is a comedy, then let it be like that, if it isn't one, then just push a backstory like his mother died of cancer when he was 8 and he lived in an orphanage his whole life.

I saw the title and said: "This seems right up my alley". But then I read the post and I don't know most of these words.
Expy -
A character that was deliberately crafted to be very similar to another character in a different work, but is not intended to be exactly like the inspiration.
Kemonomimi -
People that look mostly human but have actual animal ears.

Hope that clears up any confusion.
He’s just ret’ed
I don’t get it.

That's the thing, I want to write this guy as an asshole, so it’ll be cathartic when he finally gets put in his place.

I don't know the character, and it sounds like I don't want to know him. I'm also not entirely sure what you want to get out of this.

But Deconstruction... For that, you just need to understand- not the character, but the tropes that compose the character. Look at every little detail, and figure out why the character was written the way they were. Once you understand why, you can either do a better job, or change it to what you care about.

@.@)
Either that was a pun on asshole, or I didn't scroll down enough.

And for that, put an unrelated backstory then.
Like my example,

backstory like his mother died of cancer when he was 8 and he lived in an orphanage his whole life.
This can explain many things, but it cannot explain stuff like MC hating the colour green, or disliking romance books, or refusing to turn on the air conditioning in summers, etc.

This trope is why I don't like Jin:
  • Entitled to Have You: Jin's infatuation with Hitomi has shades of this. The manga attempts to justify it by depicting humans as on the verge of extinction and as the only human female, it's only natural that she become his girlfriend. Unfortunately, Jin's fantasies are colored by his intense dislike of animals, and, as such, involve him treating the animal students in ways that Hitomi would obviously never approve of yet still fawning all over him with slavish devotion.

The first thing that comes to mind is to have Hitami(legally distinct!) spurn him in favor of a beast girl. Preferably one that he bullied. Maybe as a result of how he treated her, even. Hitami decides to comfort the victim over their mistreatment and then they tell him to fuck off NTR style.

For the sake of the deconstruction, the question to ask here is "Does propagating the species really justify the relationship?" She should step back from the relationship and force him to reconsider his prejudices and overcome his flaws. If it weren't for the 'last of their kind' thing, that would be a permanent break up, but they might get back together if the author wills it. If he refuses to grow, then humanity can go to hell.

Usually this sort of thing would be done from Hitami's perspective, though.

Alternatively, you can portray Hitami as a tragic victim here. She's willing to sacrifice her principles and her own body for the sake of the species, even if she hates the MC. This won't do well on SH since we like the lighthearted stuff more, but whatever. For bonus tragedy points, have both of them get murdered by beast kin in retaliation for something the MC did.

She could also go psycho and put him in a coma so she can harvest his sperm without dealing with his shit.

Catharsis is the relief/apathy one gets after experiencing strong emotions. It's why people like Tragedies and bad Romances even though you'd theoretically never want to read or experience those things.

I see what you did.

Damn. NTR? Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

There's no 'last of their kind' thing in my story, so their relationship would permanently drop.
