I recently started writing on this website and now I came to a problem.
I normally invest hours of work in every chapter I publish, as english is my second language. But lately, I found many popular books, having really bad writing that still are popular, with no one complaining about it.

So, I really started wondering if it's overkil to invest so much time for a single chapter? How many hours do you take for a chapter?

It's mostly a matter of preference. If you're writing specifically for money, it will likely be more profitable in the short term to write faster, if at a slightly lower quality. It also might be easier to quickly gather an audience. If you want to improve as a writer though, it's better to pay attention to that quality, and if you persist in writing, you'll have much better chances in the future if you learn to write well at a faster pace.

As long as you avoid overthinking and editing a chapter again and again so it looks best it can be, there isn't really an upper limit to the time it takes to write one.

I usually spend between one and three hours writing and editing a ~3k words long chapter; this number tends to change a lot across time and various stories.

Once a week, with two hour max on a chapter each day. Basically 14 hour work on a single chapter, yet still relaxing because only work for two hour.

That's the most relaxing yet still filled with quality. And because you worked with it for more than one day, you can connect how the next five chapter would look like.

But this workflow would only produce a Chapter a week.

Many other author use at least 2-3 chapter a week, and it doubles on this workflow.

Takes me about 20 minutes to plan it out. An hour and a half to write it. Say between 1000-2000 words. Another 15-20 minutes to edit it. Still I struggle catch alot of typo's and stuff. If i was intent on establishing quality control it would probably take me about 6 hours. I use Sundays to preplan my stuff. Plan out character arcs and so on.

I'd say my biggest challenge is juggling the unpublished stuff at the same time. It often means neglecting one or the other.

Honestly, you'll have a much better time (and health) if you write ahead before publishing it everyday.
