I don't think any specific number makes sense, but uhn... Just try thinking of how many people can have a different role to play in your story I guess?
You can introduce them and keep them for as long as they have a reason to be relevant... Just make sure you don't introduce anyone that could easily solve all problems your MC has by themselves. (For example, if your MC is Batman, don't ever introduce Superman to the story, as Superman makes every other superhero in existence pointless.)
