I always say write as much as required to complete the "Episode". Whether it is 1k or 20k. Write until whatever you set out to complete within the chapter is finished.
Don't let yourself get too far ahead, though, and make sure if you're getting up there in your Word Count that it's necessary. I made that mistake with a couple of my early chapters. Write out a comfortable amount of progress and then end it or find a good stopping point. Learned the hard way that 8k+ chapters are both draining for you as the author and your readers who will have to slog through it.
I agree with this statement! You can make parts as well, so it is easier on the reader. If you didn't complete what you wanted to in 2k words just make a part 2 of chapter 20 or whatever.I don't recommend going over 4k, when that can easily be split into 2, 3, hell, even 4 chapters. It's really in your best interest to have chapters in the 1k-2k range to not feel too long or too short. Plus, you can write more chapters that way!
What does a thick chapter look like? Is it more horizontal?Long is good, but thick is better ?
