I see that it is based on the Rising filter. What does Rising measure?

Nobody Knows. It apparently factors in Reads, Page Views, Interactions (comments) between reader and author and some other mystical X-Factor.

The answer: no one knows the exact formula except Tony (the owners of this site).

I suspect... trending fiction is determined by the engagement, ranked daily.

So, the number of views, favorites, readers, ratings, comments, and reviews received per day are very likely determining factors for the trending.

However, we don't know the exact formula and composition of engagement to determine becoming trending.

Whatever the formula is - it seems to love the same 4/5 books everyday. Even when the book is not in the top 7/8 according to the filter it features on the home page.

Lucky.

Your assumption is half-true. In general, popular works appear more frequently in trending. Why?

Because they have a loyal readership that contributes views, favorites, and comments almost daily. If rankings are calculated daily, it makes sense that popular works regularly trend.

If you want to see specific trends... try filtering genres with the Release Filter feature, and you'll see new fiction trending due to its fresh engagement.

It also has some kind of cutoff. After 2000ish readers, a book can't really get into the top10. It is not confirmed officially, but we (multiple other authors) are pretty much certain that there is some kind of rule present to make sure already popular works aren't hogging the spots.

(Which don't get me wrong, I agree with. Books with ample views don't need the exposure anymore.)

Exactly. And after being on trending for too many times, readers will get bored of seeing the same titles again and again so the benefit from trending is diminished.

Or you could use the ranking thru specific tags then do chapters views ratings reviews and whether the story is completed or not.
Honestly I don’t really look at the trending in the homepage so much as a reader. I mean if there’s a book I know in there I might look at the ranking maybe tell the author but it’s not something I look at really for new material to read. I mostly look thru the day to day feed and see what catches my eye.

The one rule that is known is that a series cannot be listed as trending two days in a row.
