How does ranking work?

My ongoing novel with less favorites and readers is ranked higher than other novels with more favorites, reviews, and readers. What is going on?

nobody know how exactly it works, that's on purpose so people can't game the system .

a post once went out.
it detailed the forum members idea on how the rankings actually work.
with their mathematical take on the algorithm they thought they perhaps figured out.

thing is.
they just happened to die, in a freak accident.
in fact, anyone who ever read that post...
(it was titled, "the Pelican Brief", BTW)
just happens to disappear.

Legend has it that the ranking system just appeared one day with no explanation, so not even the site owner can tell you how it works....
