Hello. I'm new here, and I'm searching for new stories to read and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stories. My question is: How do you go about finding new, good stories? What's your preferred method? Do you just search for genres? Tags? Look up what's most popular? Check the forums? Are there people out there who curate lists? For me, it's especially hard, because I'm not looking for a specific genre or topic, but I want to find something that's original and different and well-written.

Check your favorite genre and tag, search for the story with the most view and read the synopsis if it isn't totally your taste but similar then look to the recommendation below. Or ask here like you do and wait for those waiting in the dark to shine

You can look into the most recent published stories and see if there's something really innovative. Sometimes gems don't get views because they don't fully fit the tastes of the readership here.

Unlike NU I don't think there is a method to share lists of works.
And while I liked the idea to do it as forum threads at a glance, that's probably just asking for drama.

There's no surefire way to sort by quality. Rating is a good indicator how good a work is at evoking strong emotions.
Agreeing with popularity is a matter of preference, but if you hate the majority of everything big on the site, the search for the buried gems will be painful in any case since even the unpopular ones often follow the theme.

The forum has a lot of authors in the middle of the field in terms of popularity, but with enough dedication to stick around, so that's your best bet imo. Review threads might be especially helpful, since they're the closest you'll get to curated lists.
Even if "original and different" are entirely subjective attributes.

Read, read, read. In no time you'll find yourself to have gone through a sheer ammount of them.
I go through the searching for the ones with most readers and read synopsis till I find something that captivates me.
Though, most of the time I just buy and read books instead.

Covers, then blurb, then peek inside. If I'm still reading after several paragraphs, I will add it to the list (or buy, if it's physical book).
if it's written in 1st person present tense it goes on a bonfire.

You can check the reading list of my profile. There’s quite a lot of good stuff there https://www.scribblehub.com/profile/57258/ilikewaterkusa/

Check the latest series list. Then you can read the book from the beginning and not have to catch up on anything. Or find series that are finished. OR find a thread for promoting stories (you could always check out mine as well . . . )

1. Look at the genre and tags.
2. Read the synopsis.
3. Give the first few chapters a read.

Point 3 is a bit moot because most of the times, I only find the work boring 100 chapters in.

Oh, I almost forgot.

0. Check how many chapters are there first. Less than 100, not even going to read it. This point is made for how many times I was burned from authors dropping their works.
