Don't worry, its not contagious. You can't even 'catch' stupid in the first place. Well I suppose there is age related dementia, and alcohol is known to rather severely impair cognition...

Stupid and Smart is just a measure of how effective a person is when using his intellectual capability to deal with the world or the situation.
And there's more than just intellectual intelligence. Emotional intelligence also exist. And social intelligence also exist.
This guy maybe smart in school and lessons. But if he doesn't have enough emotional intelligence, he may not handle his own sadness or anger. And if he doesn't have enough social intelligence, he may not be able to interact with other people as good as his peers.
And therefore, the guy became a bullied awkward nerd that were outcast in his class and fail to gain success with his intelligence. And he fail to get work due to not know how to interact with interviewer and office politic.
While his peers that were balanced and manage to take advantage of all his intelligence manages to get the job they want since they know how to interact properly and how to get the right track.
Some of his mediocre friend didn't have enough intellectual capability, so they got tricked and maybe fail to get the job they wanted. But they manage to interact with interviewer properly and fit in the office and the boss.
And the bullies maybe just like the mediocre or the one who take the advantage ? Who knows ? If their bullying didn't affect their study, they might get it normal, albeit they may not be able to bully again until they got proper position.
