I'm not only talking about novel, but also movies, video games, etc

Let's rewind back at least 15 years ago, where Marvel Cinematic Universe are still on their first phase, Isekai genre is on high boom that at least 70% of new published webnovel genre are isekai, Mega video game publisher racing each other to buy ip from indie game devs and hoping for them to be a cashcow, while tencent exist but hasn't makes any moves at all.

Back then, the popular and likeable main character in media were mostly the type that while they're not aspiring to be a hero, they're the type who can't just sit still and do nothing while something wrong is going on around them.
Those main characters would step out from their comfort zone, helping the people they care about, and trying to fix the world despite they are facing with such a big obstacle that even they know that it's too big to handle : their own needs and desire.

Back then, main characters would be aspiring to fix the world from problem, while they themselves facing with a problem of wanting to show off, needing an audience to feel validated, and totally bummed out when they found out that their hardwork is basically just a thankless job with no rewards.
Those inner struggle is what made those main characters to be so likeable and relatable because it making us to root for them, they obviously want to make the world a better place, yet they're the one who has to pay for it, which makes you think that even these heroes are given up, you wouldn't blame them.

But in the end, those main characters still preserve until whole problem is fixed, and basically just settle with some bit of compensation, then finally walking out of the scene without causing any fuss.

Now let's back to reality today, where it's a different generation took the baton of writing, where the millennial pass their legacy into the zoomer writer, what do we got?

The next generation were mising the part that the root of these characters are supposed to be someone who wants to do good but they got sidetracked by their own self interest.
What we got instead, is just some characters who just want to serve their own self-interest, who wants to have glory as hero despite there's no need for a hero, characters who just want to take arms because they're bored, not because there is an inevitable war to fight.
Which of course in the end, they ended up to be the hero they're aspire to be. Why? Because the plot dictate so.

Long story short, what we got nowadays is a bunch of characters who got it backwards. We don't get character who want to do right but then got hindered by their own desire.

But instead, we got characters who want to serve their own desire, but just ended up with saving the world.

I don't agree. I think that those stories still exist. There are more stories now than ever. That inevitably means there is more bad. It's less about things changing and more about where you're looking for entertainment.

What goes wrong?

Society shifted from "value creation" to "extraction". No normal human being would want to save such selfish world, unless one get to exploit it after saving it.

This change to extraction paradigm pervades in every aspects of life, whether it is economically and politically. It is only an inevitable consequence that culture follows suit.

Key technical talents (who actually solve problems) are laid-off, betrayed after years of service, in profit to
growing commercial departments (who focus on extracting the most out of the customer base and existing products). This is the archetypal humble hardworking hero thrown away in favor of the opportunistic cunning protagonist.

CEO and investors get richer by fucking around with stocks, by buying back shares and real estate, monopoly and lobbying, rather than actual work. Thus, corporate enshittification slowly eat you up as customer. See, it's not about being good and hardworking, it's about working smarter and have more power

Nowadays, your fellow citizens go viral overnight, and become rich af with selfish scams. Is it the result of their heroic struggle to step out of their comfort zone? Is it because they love their family so much they wanted to provide them with a lambo at the cost of random strangers' credulity? Why are they rewarded?

This World needs saving? It better negotiate with the protagonist and reward their efforts, because people are fed-up seeing goodwill being exploited

The truth is that we reached a stage of society, where you're better off being a disease, a parasite, a cancer than being part of whatever sick creature human organizations have become. That's why it reflects in art

Extraction isn't evil in itself, but if you dislike selfish the heroes of this generation, you should bear an even greater dislike to the circumstances that gave birth to them.

Edit: It's funny that korean media are the worst offenders in terms of selfish protagonists. Samsung Kingdom speedran towards late stage hypercapitalist dystopia, and now everyone's wet dream is to participate to a deadly Squid game to get quick buck without having to endure the suffering of corpo daily life.

Whether it's Second Coming of Gluttony or Solo Leveling, the motives of MC are grounded on protecting very specific people (Teresa for SCOG or sick mom in SL), and saving the world is incidental.

Also, OP's past MCU superheroes selflessly saved the world for free. But today's superheroes are randomly awakened people who hunt in dungeons for money, and whose sole backstory is to escape poverty and the hard labour of wage slavery

On the other hand, Japanese culture always had a stronger cohesion due to natural disasters. Their MC always have a stronger inclination to jump into ordeals out of responsibility.

Lastly, I wanted to mention that nowadays, the audience isn't looking for people saving the world. They're looking for MC beating the shit out of people. If you give a gun to someone, you have to provide a target too. The target is just conveniently some pests threatening world peace. That's why you end up with saving the world and doing good as an after thought.

If you ask me, Korean works are a cry for help

Woot ma first post deletions by mod!

So.. yeah, I disagree, but can't say why because censorship of things that requires talking about 'subjects' who invaded media but are apparently untouchable here. But I can tell you a story.

Disney bought Marvel in 2009 because they wanted to expand their audience beyond girls. Ever since they fired the old writers and artists, changed the rules on respecting canon, and hired people who're more interested in spreading their brain rot than writing good stories. In doing so, they chased off the core audience, and now are throwing manga into the "comics sold" numbers to hide the fact that some Marvel comics only sold maybe 4k books. As proof, there's been no pivotal storylines since the acquisition and all the popular films are based on stories from before 2009. The last good storyline was what, House of M? Which was before the buyout.

Then there's all the comic book stores that shut down, ditched modern comics to only sell back issues, and/or moved into tabletop gaming, anime, and manga.

Think of all the character changes since 2009 and you'll see what I mean. There's been more controversy than anything else.

If you wanna, watch some comicbook news on youtube by non mainstream creator. They cut the glazing to the meat, and the things they'll bring up will send you down a rabbit hole that goes into news, multinational government conspiracies, cults, and other very wild things. Them lead addled boomers really set us up for a hard time.

Don't go down the rabbit hole. Nothing in wonderland makes sense until either you eat the mushroom that one side makes you shrink and the other side makes you giant, or you are dying of mercury poisoning like a medieval hat merchant. Instead you should go to college and take an art history class.

There is an old Buddhist saying: The only constant is change.

I think what happened is they considered people wanting to do good to be too standard, and unrelatable.
They had to give them motives, and selfishness is a motive.

Some motives can be selfish but drive to do good. Batman and Punisher are driven by hate after losing their families. Others might seek glory, fame or other reasons and pretend to be Heroes. Others want to make people they care about proud of them.
Not only are the original motivations important, but how they progress as a character.
If they remain just as selfish, it can feel hollow. If they can progress into realizing they were messed up in the head, it could actually be interesting.

New writers just don't seem to understand these things . . . . . and the way they plot, I think AI might be used.

There is an entire genre called Evil Protagonist where the MC is an outright evil person, but they are often pitted against an evil worse person.
Best summed up from an episode of Pinky and the Brain (The one where Snowball first appears)
Pinky: What are we doing tonight, Brain?
Brain: What we do every night?
Pinky: Try to take over the world?
Brain: Not tonight, Pinky. Tonight we save the world . . . . so it is available to be taken over tomorrow night.
