While the underlying principles are probably the same, there would be some variables in a fantasy story that one should watch out for. One should also not forget that people aren't emotionless machines running game theory simulations (for better or worse, I personally think the latter), and they act very often on their emotions or beliefs without actually thinking things through. In fact, even when they do think things through, rarely will they see something they don't want to see.
Humans are stubborn, foolish, emotional, lazy and dislike change. The last part is very important. Humans aren't ready to accept that things are different, they will go against reason (flawed or not is a different question, as is about the correctness of their decisions in long term) and act the same as they did in the past, despite experiencing different circumstances.
But most importantly, they don't realise it, but they in fact, control very little. They can do something, but that something is incomparably small to what is going on around them. I've seen people think that they can control their own destinies (pfff, imagine that lol), while in reality living a life is the same as navigating a small boat in a turbulent sea. You have no idea what next wave is going to hit you, and when things will be calm. You can't tell where you really are. You can't even tell the time of day sometimes. You can only row and pray that your teensy boat will stay afloat.
But I digress.
