Funny bits with your novel + family... Ok, a bit more context. I was writing my novel, and Dad read out the first paragraph of the chapter of the novel. Suddenly, he became worried for my physical and mental health, short of me confessing I'd be dying. Mom got involved. Now, there are two of them worried for me.

Here's the bit:

I tapped my finger on the armrest. The reality of the situation kept threatening to knock me loose. Was it my destiny to be kicked down by the universe over and over again? Had I wronged some divine order in a past life? I closed my eyes, inhaled through my nose, and tried to anchor myself through sheer will. But calm wouldn’t come.

What did I tell them and the genuine truth: Last chapter was about the protagonist's twin sister got possessed by an octopus, so the protagonist was really worried. Mom laughed, and then dad just stared at me, deciding he was better off youtube.

In reality, the octopus was some eldricth existence and I purposefully used the word octopus to make them laugh.

My mother burned or deleted(depending on whether physical or digital) the stories I wrote upon reading them because she didn't agree with what I wrote. She would compliment me on my grammar after but the hard work being lost like that gave me some heavy spite.

I wasn't able actually put out anything until I was on my own. Wish I had a funny version of this.

My father just looks at me some time, like really looks at me *intensely*. Despite spending so much time online, reading and writing i still complete my tasks.?

My family refuses to even touch my books. My mom usually likes reading fantasy, but years ago for some reason she'll never explain, she told me to stop asking her to read them because she's never going to. I remember being a teenager and going "Mom, I wrote a story! Wanna read it?" "No, honey. I'm reading Harry Potter." "But you've read Harry Potter five times already...this year." "And when I'm done, I'm going to read it again!"

The only thing my dad hates more than reading is fantasy in general. Anything that couldn't conceivably happen in real life is "baby stuff." He's fine with me writing it, but it drives him insane that I give my books away for free. To him, the only reason to write (or do anything, really) is to make money. He's the kind of guy who retired from his full time job and had five part time jobs a week later because his only real hobby is making money. I learned to stop telling him about my books years ago when the first question out of his mouth was never "What's it about?", but "How much are you selling it for?"

My family didn't support my writing much. They treated it like a hobby, almost the same as playing games, and would often tell me to focus on studying instead. They're not against it, though, so that's a plus.

But after they learned that I started making money from it:

"Why are you here playing games? Go write."
"You're free today, right? Why don't you go write a chapter?"
"How many chapters did you write today?"

My mother (amateur author herself) reads one of my stories and even finds it somewhat good. However, the issue is, she states that her English is too poor to actually read the originals. Which means that if I want her to read anything I wrote, I first need to translate it into German, which at times takes like four to five hours per chapter.
This is no effort I can take for more than one story, and even that one is damned to always get further and further behind.
And did I mention that pure translation work totally sucks?!

I suppose I got at least something to gift her on the different occasions (Mother's Day, Birthday, Christmas).

I write fantasy tragedy, horror and science fiction with tragedy. Nothing funny about My work. The only funny thing I wrote is Called "Childpocalipse" and si about zombi children making a mess. Look it up if ya want (is not here, is in other webs).
About my family: My mom would read anything I write and say is good, cant trust her for quality control at all, My sister wont read anything, ever.

You either have two very controlling, over-bearing parents, or two very obtuse, close-minded ones.

My relatives are generally somewhat supportive. My father in particular had author friends when I was a kid and even took me to meet them sometimes, so he's always been supportive of my writing. My mother isnt quite so much, she does support me writing but whenever she actually reads it she's too soft spined for the violence and stuff like that. So she doesnt really read much of it very often. But hey, one out of two to read my stuff isn't bad at all. He'll even read the fanfiction.

But more importantly to me are my two cousins. One of them is the one who got me into fanfiction to begin with, he'll eventually read most anything I write but generally only once its posted and rarely will they have any feedback. The other one will only read it if I read it aloud to them but they do offer a lot more critical feedback which is nice.

My mom read one snippet of an older story before. She asked me where she can find my stories, and I told her that she shouldn't even bother because it has lesbian romance. I tell this to anyone in my family any time they say they want to read it.

I feel like I should convince them to read it. Let the awkwardness set in. :blob_evil_two:

While I've told my parents that I'm writing, I've never shown them my writing. My parents are pretty conservative and religious, and I know they wouldn't really agree with some of the stuff I write. They'd also probably be low key concerned about how dark some of my writing is.

But neither of my parents are novel readers, so they've never shown any interest in reading it in first place. My dad reads, but only informational books and some classical novels, but that's it. My mom doesn't read anything but self-help and religious books. I'd probably show my siblings it, if it weren't for the fact that none of them like reading, too.

So I don't really have any lines that I've shown to them since they don't seem to care about it when I mention it, unfortunately. All the feedback I've gotten has been from people online and one coworker of mine who reads it when she has sometime.

I ask my mama read my sorry, she reads it, and just looks at me and says I need to calm down with my "horror" description. My story isn't even horror but image reading about some monster attacking people dead at night and then a man getting his leg pierced with some roots on the first chapter. She just looked at me like I wouldn't sleep today and it wasn't even that much...:blob_frown:

My parents don’t really know much about my hobbies, tbh. None of my irl friends or family even know that I draw, let alone that I completed and published a manga ten years ago. And writing?
I think the only person who’s ever read my writing was my English teacher who I accidentally spooked with a horror story about murderous twins back in yr10. That’s about it.
