So you know the standard cultivation world where there are Clans/sects? And the people of the cultivation world already discovered most of the realms?
What if we start at the beginning of the cultivation world, what I mean is what if the MC is part of the first people discovering cultivation?
And we get to see the transition from a clan(only people related by blood can be in a clan) to a sect(A sect is a place where everyone has equal opportunities, though there will probably be a few ruling families), and we get to see the MC being 1 of the founding fathers/mothers of cultivation, and since he/she is the MC he/she will have the highest cultivation at the end of the story.

Optional: The MC having little to no talent, and we get see he/she's journey from a mortal to immortal.

Had plans for something similar to this. Still working out the Cultivation Realms. Basically the Main Character will be this Sage Immortal from Far Far into the future (Like millions of years into the future). He will then forcefully try and reincarnate (Though he goes back farther then he wants to) during the times of Qi Awakening for the world (It's like during earth's Ancient Times but the world is many times bigger). His goal will be to pave the way for cultivators by "discovering" realms and helping a select few geniuses and talentless people rise above the rest. He will also help people form Clans/Sects while trying to build his own. Undecided if I want him to be in the limelight of the world, or the shadow behind the world guiding it.

Since "cultivation" as such is a Chinese thing, they use clans and sects from their history as a point of reference.
Chinese aren't religious in the traditional sense. Historically they have believed that higher powers can be achieved by everyone. That has formed the basis of cultivation novels.

Cultivation novels have already discovered (or forgotten) paths because of the underlying bias of relying on powerful ancient artifacts/scriptures and all the other gizmos.

Not only that, in the absence of large number of cultivators (since MC will be a cultivation pioneer) the MC will mostly be a scholar in a room. It is unlikely he will face one of the other pioneers in battle. Basically there won't be enough scarcity of resources to cause a battle.

Moreover, as a pioneer it will only be believable if the MC makes mistakes and has a largely flawed cultivation.

Another thing of note is that considering the time it will take for a village to become a nation, MC will have to reincarnate quite a few times. As a primitive cultivator, it's unlikely he will make it to immortality before at least a few failed attempts and deaths.

It will start with people doing martial arts (since wuxia and xianxia have a lot in common) some martial artists will be able to achieve higher peaks, other will follow their examples. Over time (lots and lots of time), the martial art system will be developed enough that there will be ideas and hypotheses about other "paths". On particular, medical and material studies will develop to a very high degree which will lead to animal and human experimentation in order to further improve the existing knowledge. Then, some small information about cultivation will begin to bleed into the existing system. Add a tonne of time and a primitive system of cultivation will be common (or not, but it will be known and actively studied). At that time, the society will be developed to the point where we'll be easily mistaking it for a sci-fi environment. Then there will be a breakthrough in cultivation and, since most novels empathise the power being concentrated in the hands of a very small number of elites, the existing order will collapse, bringing in a new primitive age.
Cultivation will develop slowly, with wars and conflicts and over many many years after that.
Something like that

Cultivation suddenly appeared on earth(modern) and now there is a mad scramble to be the strongest and most knowledgeable but because its dangerous to try and cultivate, only few people are pioneers.
How about this type of premise?
It's free to use.
Edit: there's also the social media so you will always see the the latest news of someone who dies of tribulations and energy circulation problems. They also have a chatgroup that develops into a clan.
While the governments are trying to supress and experiment on live subjects the netizens are still idiots but are now posting cultivation related memes(the farmville kinds).
Edit: call up the most edgy and cringe worthy chunnis you can and have them think up the names of moves and realms(like stardark unilight triad beam for a simple fireball)

Often times before the rise of cultivation there are "gods" that are formed in the primordial Era such as the Three Purities. Daode Tianzun is said to teach all livings things. Also some immortals are just born or their are creatures born as powerful creatures. So the cultivation is an emulation of the existing existences in many novels.
