There are countless stories out there and even a lot in here.

Many love reading or writing their own original stories while some dare to use existing fiction and write their own version of said story.

Me? I enjoy reading and writing fanfiction as anyone can see here.

So, what about you?

P.s. if you have a fanfic you want to recommend please do place it here, I am looking for new one to read as well~

Fanfiction... I'm not really a fanfic reader, but I do get stuck on those "but what if they'd done THIS instead?" brainfarts, and my imagination gets constipated until I let it loose. So I write the alternate outcomes just to see how bad it would've smelled if it really happened.

When a fan fiction actually expands on the story rather than taking it in a "better direction" (per the fanfic author's vision), it can be cool. There was a LOT of Star Trek fanfiction published between the end of the series and the start of the animated series, and even more between the end of the animated series and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. A lot of those fan fiction authors wound up writing official material for the shows and movies that came later because they did expand on it. Some of it, like Spock's World, was great. Some of it, like How Much For Just The Planet? was silly enough to be passable (and written by the author of Faces of Fire, which gave the Klingons more depth than TNG managed, and in just one book)
A Splinter of the Mind's Eye was a good piece of Star Wars fanfiction, that introduced some ideas used in the Expanded Universe of comic books, games and novels pre-Disney buyout. Never mind the fact that some core elements went directly against what Lucas decided was his ultimate vision - it expanded the universe.

Don't really enjoy fanfiction... feels.... claustrophobic... Like, there is an invisible prison you can never get out of.
Understandable since the feeling of something already determined only to be changed entirely is hard to accept
I enjoy reading both original fictions and fanfictions. But I mostly read original works on scribblehub.
That's fair. In my case, I do both in webnovel while go for fanfiction here in scribble

This! Same with that random quiet nights when you stare at ceiling and think what ifs

Prefer original fiction. Fanfiction is boring IMO (and a bit dishonest IMO. You're just building on someone else's characters). I don't mind inspirations though as long as it's not the same character.

I've got a soft-spot for fan-fiction as well, and as an author I actively encourage it where my own works are concerned.

I've written some (collaboratively) and have piles of notebooks alongside file folders galore with notes, scene-drafts, and other scribbles for a wide variety of fan-fics.

Recently though, I haven't actually read any good ones that interested me. Mostly because I haven't had much time for any reading, so sadly, I can't recommend any.

I managed to find the perfect sweet spot for absolutely no visibility...but I did it to myself, so I guess I can't complain. Technically fan fiction, but not using canon characters so...I guess I'm not really sure what audience I was aiming for? IDK, just wanted to tell a story.

An Ember of Sundown (links in the sig) take place in Exandria, but feature all original characters and stories. The established world is used as a setting, not a plot.
