What is the easiest way to differentiate between a fairy, a pixie, a sprite and a fae in fantasy novels?

Fae is usually all encompassing for those sorts of creatures, but can also be used to refer specifically to high ranked/powerful species. Fairy is usually the most generic term for a small winged humanoid, pixie is much the same, but is a specific species, sprite is? Hmm. Not as certain. Think it's derived from spirit, but meant more as a fae creature.

I personally see them as this:
Fairy: Probably a humanoid with wings and some other characteristics.
Pixie: Similar to a fairy but smaller.
Spirit: A aspect of nature taken form, like a body of fire or water, either having a humanoid appearance or animal.
Fae: My mind immediately goes to the classical form of a Fairy or Fae who do cruel stuff to humans, not for malice but because they don't understand human morals.

My personal distinction, regardless of the setting, is that a fairy is just another race just like elves or demons (smol with dragonfly-like wings, basically), a pixie is a very smol happy thing that flies around and pulls pranks, and a fae is an otherwordly/alien race that's hard to understand for humans, with no particular distinguishing characteristics; they would depend on the setting.

Sprite and spirit (I'm assuming those two words mean the same thing) would be an embodiment of nature or an element, a sort of both caretaker and something brought to life by the particular element.

As for how to differentiate them, I'd say that fairy is humanlike, pixie is just a smal cute annoying lovable thing, fae is unnatural to humans (not supernatural, but unnatural, as in otherwordly or something similar) and spirit is the embodiment of an element.

Same perspective with you except for fae, I see them as little dragonoid creatures that acts like a fairy

Pixie costs 25 gold and upgrades into sprite which costs 30 gold and can attack without retaliation

Fairies gives the yuusha the key to defeat the demon lord

Faery dragon is a night elf unit and also the anti-dive healer in heroes of the storm

A pixie is a fairy that belongs to the fae category of spirits.

What is the easiest way to differentiate between a fairy, a pixie, a sprite and a fae in fantasy novels?

Fae = a general umbrella term for all non-evil non-human but distinctly humanoid creatures out of English or occasionally French (but not Irish or Welsh) lore. In modern writing, it can expand further to encompass some non-evil non-human humanoid creatures from German, Slavic, or occasionally even Middle Eastern or Japanese lore.

(Note that non-evil does not mean good. It does not even mean "not cruel." It just means they are not distinctly evil (such as demons) and do have the capacity to be good. However, they very often are depicted as being dicks to humans in one way or another, but usually not in a manner that is filled with distinct malice or murderous intent.)

Fairy = a general umbrella term for winged creatures that have an otherwise human-like appearance. This definition makes no differentiation on size, but those who are full normal human size are generally depicted as far more powerful. There are also some that can hide their wings, or their wings are naturally hidden unless manifested magically. Their wings are always depicted as being insect-like, but there is a wide range of possible appearances within those standards. The most common depiction is butterfly-like, but a dragonfly-like arrangement is also common. There are also depictions that involve the fairies having wings of light (often in the "not visible unless magically manifested" varieties.)

Pixie = a winged humanoid specifically noted for their small size, usually of a size that can fit in the palm of an adult human's hand, ranging from the size of a doll at the high end to the size of an adult's thumb at the small end. Their wings are almost always depicted as being dragonfly-like.

Sprite = a very poorly defined term that sometimes has overlap with "pixie" in it's definition. Can also, in some cases, drift into the realm of describing immaterial beings or beings of pure light and energy who are formless in nature. However, even when going into that territory, they are always depicted as small and never depicted as individually powerful. (Can be incredibly powerful in numbers though.)

Like dragons, it ultimately depends on the setting, as all these words can mean different things in different contexts and there is a certain overlap.
  • Fae, or the Fair Folk, is usually the broadest term and encompasses most (if not all) of the others and more. A very broad term, but they usually share a high affinity to magic (if they aren't basically made from magic in the first place) and will operate on Blue-and-orange morals. Can also include elves, both in the classical and modern sense, but also things like coin-shìth (fae dogs/hounds) and even overlap with dragons if fae or fairy dragons are a thing.
  • Fairy is sometimes used synonymous to fae or as a term for individual fae, but in many modern contexts the word is also used specifically for the Tinkerbelle style fairies, so overall nice and friendly, but with a mischievous streak, but not usually hostile by default.
  • Pixies are often depicted without wings, sometimes very similar to more traditional variants of elves. Sometimes, especially in modern variants, also a meaner, if not outright evil type of (Tinkerbelle-)fairy
  • Sprites are often specifically nature spirits or fae attuned to specific elements or natural locations, but the term also often includes Spriggans who are associated with man-made structures like burial sites.
All these terms have strong associations with Celtic mythology, though they are by no means exclusive.
Depending on the setting, creatures from other mythologies like Japanese Yokai are counted as their regional group(s) of fae.

I like it when these creatures have different kinds of wings.
Like butterfly, dragonfly, leaf, or season based wings.

Fairy - Attractive person in many Chinese cultivation novels, or a homosexual male.

Sprite - lemon lime soft drink that Kobe Bryant endorsed. Slogan was: “Obey your thirst.”

Pixie - Creatures that will dive bomb up your anus… at least that’s what I heard from a poster here.

Maybe don't have sprites if people are going to get them mixed up with spirits.

If they are so similar to fairies does it do anything other than make the story needlessly complicated?

Fairy: Season with chili and lime. Pairs well with pale beer.
Pixie: Season with paprika and oregano. Pairs well with pinot noir.
Spirit: Season with rosemary and thyme. Pairs well with chardonnay.
Fae: Season with garlic and ginger. Pairs well with zinfandel.

Not really. Fae and Fairy are both umbrella categories that sprites and pixies can fit inside, but it does not mean they make up the entirety of that category. In other words, saying that all fae are pixies is like saying all beverages are sprites.

You can say literally anything and be right. Most of the terms are synonyms or meant different things if you walked two or three miles.

Personally... I lean into that. There's a shit ton of similar creatures with different names, each name with a very specific and niche meaning that doesn't necessarily exclude them from falling under other names.

For example, a Pixie is an earth dwelling fairy with short stature and a mischievous streak.

A Pixie is an Earth Fairy, a Fae Spirit of the elemental earth, and a type of Gnome. All at the same time. But there are Fae associated with the Air, or unassociated with elements. There are also Gnomes that aren't Fae or Spirits at all. And the vast majority of Spirits aren't Fae, but some of those are associated with Earth.

What is the difference between sprites and pixies?

I cover sprites in an earlier post, but they're pretty much an ill-defined type of fey creature that can sometimes look identical to pixies or sometimes be just balls of light. Or, sometimes balls of light with wings (think Zelda fairies from the N64 era. It would have been more accurate to call them sprites.)

In other words, pixies are the most clearly defined and specific of the 4, and something that looks identical to a pixie can also be called all of the other 3 as well by technicality, but the other 3 definitions also expand to potentially refer to more things than just pixie-like creatures.

If it's a ball of light or can go ethereal, it's a sprite not a pixie. If it has butterfly wings instead of dragonfly wings, it's a fairy not a pixie. Pixie is very much the most clearly defined and exclusive of all of them. It very specifically and only refers to a miniature humanoid with dragonfly wings.
