So the story I settled on is basically What If the enemy of I Killed The Academy’s Player survived and had a love-hate dynamic the MC. Plotting against him after the regression. A villain who you love to hate and want to lose in the end.
No, it’s not an exact copy because I wouldn’t be able to write a power system like that even if I tried. The MC isn’t dense and yeah he will create a harem but only because his main ability is to get stronger depending on his bonds with others.
Time to flex my creative muscles…
————————————————
When I first fell into this world, I despaired. My life before becoming Jordan Fisher wasn’t easy whatsoever. Having worked at a black company that barely paid minimum wage while ‘politely recommending’ workers to do overtime.
If not for my parents, I wouldn’t have made it through the day with that boring and repetitive environment. To think that I’d be defeated by those same working hours. Wasn’t this the classic trope of a guy like me being rewarded?
A black company worker getting his chance to be an overpowered lazy hero in a new world. It was like the novels I read online… Except there was one problem. The world I reincarnated into was far too dangerous and unfair to weaklings.
I could see the status windows no one else could in this world. It didn’t show my ACTUAL status or anything, but notifications would pop up whenever something happened. Like the message I’d seen when I awoke into the world.
[Congratulations! You have completed your Awakening and inherited memories from your past life. You have awakened the S Rank Innate Gift: ‘Taboo Romanticist’. The God of Love, Aphrodite, has decided to sponsor your talent.]
That was the first time I saw a blue screen.
Memories of my past life overlapped with my current life. If it wasn’t for the fact that this world was exactly the same as the game I played in the past, then I might have been excited. Sadly, I also got sponsored by the weakest of the gods.
13th place of this world’s Pantheon, Aphrodite.
I thought that things couldn’t get any worse.
Refusing to interact with my new ‘parents’ and accepting this world wholeheartedly. It was hard to believe I’d never see my real parents again. I’d died without having repaid my debt to them. The regret of my past life still lingering in a new one.
How could I have known…?
Merely a few months after my Awakening Ceremony had concluded, I awoke to see my new home ablaze. Escaping the burning building to see a city being attacked by Magic Beasts. An army of students and soldiers fighting the horde.
My second life was over before it truly began.
Now, a similar scene unfolded before my eyes.
It had been twenty four years since that day. I had just turned twenty nine and was nearing my thirties. Time had allowed me to unlock my talents completely, but I was incapable as my companion in changing the ending of this game.
At first, I thought it was an inevitable outcome.
“Road of the Dauntless” was a typical Gacha with a never ending story. There was a big bad always being hinted on, but all the player ever did was beat lackeys or participate in unrelated incidents so they could sell new characters.
“Bryan, you remember our promise?” I asked my companion. He and me were the only ones who were able to survive in the end. Being the only ones to see the wastelands. Silence becoming so heavy. Drowning us in a sea of emptiness.
There was no good and evil in this dead world.
“With you to the end of the line… Yeah, hard to forget that.” Bryan sighed while shaking the blood off his knuckles. Beneath him was a corpse so large that it could fill a city. We stood atop of the dragon forehead with room to spare.
A hole punctured between the dragon’s eyes.
“Bryan… Do you miss Earth?” I asked with great meaning. Unlike others, he was in the same situation as me. The only other who also Awakened an S Rank Innate Gift like me. Who knew that this was the Gacha of our past life.
“I like this world better.”
“That so…?” I raised a brow at him angrily.
“…Do you think I didn’t try to save it?” As if he was expecting my outburst, Bryan laughed at my suspicious attitude: “Me? While you were busy playing romance stimulations, I was fighting for my life. I’ve been fighting since I was a kid.”
His argument was solid. Unlike me, his Innate Gift was reliable. ‘Taboo Gamer’ allowed him to increase his stats and abilities infinitely so long as he killed others. When the Great Fire of Old Faustus broke out, he left the city and his family.
I heard of how hard he worked to return and ally himself with this world’s protagonist. When I met him for the first time, I thought saving the world would be easy. Bryan was so overpowered that it made others seem pathetic in comparison.
On the day of his Class Bestowal at the age of 10, Bryan attained the legendary ‘Hero’ Class that no one knew even existed before he was introduced. Gaining a total of twenty four Skills while others of his age could only gain two.
Talent paired with effort.
But was that all?
“You poisoned the army.” I didn’t stop speaking and took out a vial. Inside was a crimson spiral of dust. A cluster of magic metal known as Dissolved Unified Strain Texture, or DUST for short. Normally, it was material used in weapons.
However, Bryan had found a way to consume it.
“Devil DUST… Right… You’re saying it like no one knew that drawing power from it would eventually take their lives. We were fighting an uphill battle and I needed strength. Though they technically died because of this DUST, you know for a fact it wasn’t me pushing them to draw more power from it.” Again, there was no flaws.
Even the main characters: Fritz Lazrik, Janette V. Raymond, Onyx B. Strome, and Flinn Driftwood had taken this compound. I too had devoured this Devil DUST to forcibly enhance my abilities further. That was how necessary this poison was.
However, there was one thing I had noticed.
“Yenna Lazrik… This is made from her blood.” I clenched my fist and glared at him. There was a person this game’s protagonist, Fritz Lazrik, had loved suicidally. Willing to give his life if it meant to save them either from devils, or from herself.
He would never allow his sister to be used as an elixir. In fact, he probably died without knowing that this poison they drank was made from her blood. She must still be alive despite us having defeated her. Locked up somewhere secretly.
When I brought this up, he finally looked at me.
For the first time, he genuinely acknowledged it.
“You know… You care too much about these NPCs. I’m what you’re imagining. Maybe I’m even worse. Even so, it wasn’t a lie that I wanted to save this world. I’d tried my best, even if my methods were by killing NPCs.” He sighed at me.
“You’re not going to admit it yourself?” I spoke.
“Admit what? I’ve done nothing too wrong.”
“You killed Lex Lindblum! You probably wanted his power. Thought you’d become a protagonist if you killed him. That right? You demented piece of human trash! You think I wouldn’t notice a main character died?” I completely lost my cool.
There was no proof that he was responsible.
But I was absolutely certain.
“Why are you so angry? I admit, losing all the NPCs is tough, but think about it again. Yenna is still alive and so are others who can create puppets and undead. Given enough time and effort, we can make a society around us.”
“You won’t admit it?”
“Fine. Stop getting angry already. That was just a mistake of my youth. I didn’t know all five of the protagonists were needed for the True Ending. It isn’t like I lost nothing because of that. There were a lot of NPCs I liked in the last crusade.”
“DON’T YOU LIE TO ME?!” Since he admitted it himself, there was no use holding onto my reason any longer. I wanted to scream. I wanted to shout. Get this wretched feeling out of my system as soon as possible. It was all his fault!
“Jordan…” This evil bastard had a painful look.
“My wife and child lived and died in this world. I will never forget it. This wretched ending is because I trusted you…! You’re not the only sinner here! I’m also a sinner!” I smacked my chest like a drum and hurt myself out of anger.
“Jordan…”
“Don’t call out my name!” I screamed at him in a frantic effort to cut ties: “You screwed up the lives of this entire world! Who are you to call them ‘NPCs’? They are real and have lives. They bleed red and breathe. They have a heartbeat.”
“Don’t pretend you never call them that.”
“I learned. They were all real people.”
“Hah… I’m getting tired of listening to this.” For the first time, Bryan turned his sword towards me. Looking at me like I was a noisy bug. There was deep annoyance in his eyes. Looking at me with intentions I wasn’t dense enough to ignore.
“You want to kill me…?” I laughed in agony.
Somehow, the expected result still hurt my soul.
“It was nice being able to talk to a real person in this world. I thought I was alone… but you were always there with me. The other reason I didn’t kill you was because your Innate Gift had always been unappealing to obtain. Mine was always better.” He had a sad face. As if it was a real pity.
How fake…
“And now you want it?” I laughed at his joke.
Did he want this power when no one was left?
What was the point?
“Don’t try hiding it. I can sense your desire to kill me and the power you’re hiding.” After he said those words, Bryan swung his sword lightly in my direction. It wasn’t a Gift or a Skill. It was the pure physical strength he gained from killing.
Even though it was a light swing, my body only had the option to dodge frantically. Stepping to one side. That swing seemed to cut apart the atmosphere and Earth. The clouds above were parted and the tectonic plates were rumbling.
The dragon that was once difficult to even injure now had its snout cleanly slice in half along with the ground. A faraway mountain behind me opened up and exploded. The speed and strength of the ‘Hero’ far surpassed imagination.
And yet, the craziest part was my own survival.
Blood spurted out from the shoulder where my left arm used to be. Since I had no healing abilities, the blood oozed out of my body until there was a puddle. Giving me no choice but to cauterise the wound with my own unique magic.
“That strike should’ve killed you, and yet here you are… alive. You lied about the limits of Taboo Romanticist, didn’t you? I thought you could only gain the Innate Gifts of girls, but there are other options. No… This is definitely my Gift. How did you manage that?” Bryan became real curious about my powers. How I actually deceived him.
“I used this key.” I spoke while giving him a middle finger.
“I’m curious what would happen if I added that copied Taboo Gamer on top of my own. For the sake of our brotherhood over the years, you can give me one attack. Come on, I won’t even use a defensive Skill to block.” Bryan pretended to be generous, but I knew the latter part of what he said was a lie. He was pragmatic and sadistic.
If he needed to, he would use it.
Not that I could complain.
I’d lost the love of my life and my child.
I’ve lost the entire world.
This next attack would be my last middle finger to him, so I’ll make it count. I’ll make sure my curse will transcend the unbridgeable gap between us and hit his face. Despite my furious heart, my emotions were actually in my control.
It was a strange feeling.
I wanted to go insane, but the sadness beat out the fury. The sense of betrayal gave me courage to strike this insurmountable mountain. Someone who had never been injured or wounded through the entire journey to kill this Dragon of the End.
Not even when fighting the dragon itself.
On the other hand, I was already exhausted.
Losing an arm also threw off my balance.
My strength obviously incomparable to him.
And yet, I had to get this pain out somehow.
Bryan awakened the Hero Class, and I also had a unique Class unheard of before. It was the Guardian Class, and its main Skill was Universal Digestion. Giving me the ability to take in all the Mana within my body and the atmosphere.
I focused it into one point and refined it again.
Runes covered my only arm. Refining it.
The Runes of Refinement condensed all Mana.
Squeezing it together to the point of extremity.
…To the point of singularity.
Memories of my wife, Megan, and my child we didn’t even get to name filled my head. Years we never got to live because some bastard decided to go on a murder spree. I imagined a future that I’d never reach. A utopia that’ll never be mine. I even imagined Bryan being there for us. Part of me wished the brother I fought with was real.
But who could choose their brothers ib
This fist was a tribute to this fallen world.
And a final goodbye.
A raised my fist to give a toast and farewell.
Hundred and thousands of Refinement Runes appeared one by one. Swarming around my arm and condensing the Mana past the limit. It was an act only possible thanks to the power I’d also gained partially for helping Bryan kill the dragon.
“Huh?” Bryan blurted out stupidly.
Both of us felt it.
Suddenly, we felt all the Mana in the atmosphere and my body fade away. It was as if a new power had been accessed after refining Mana to the absolute limit. The air was shaken, but there was no wind. No breeze of a playful Wind Spirit.
No, my arm wasn’t disturbing the wind.
It was still motionless.
Despite that, the air trembled in fear. Violently shaking like a child. I hadn’t cut the ground, but the tectonic plates were also shivering. Time and space seemed to warp around me. A scene that would likely never be seen in many eternities.
“S-stop!” Bryan tried attacking me.
He shot out blades of Mana, but as soon as they came close to me, it was as if the Offensive Magic gained sentience. Choosing to squirm and retreat in my presence. I could tell that my old friend was unable to ignore this phenomenon.
His legs wriggling around like steamed noodles.
Unable to stand on his two feet any longer.
“S-spare me! We’re friends- No, brothers! You value relationships and can’t kill a brother. You can’t do it! You-” His pleading did not make me hesitate or stay my hand. The fist descended and tore through this world like a piece of paper.
Before my fist could land, I unintentionally created a black hole. Shattering reality and punching a hole in the world. A great darkness beneath the world’s layers seemed to take the impact of my punch. It caused them to scream.
“Huh?” Who did I hit?
Well, it didn’t matter anyway.
Both me and Bryan got swept up into the black hole. It didn’t even take a nanosecond for our bodies to completely disintegrate. Our souls flung into the vortex of the unknown. Never to enter heaven or hell, for that is our punishment.
Once the dust settled, I started to realise that the pain disappeared. My left arm regained feeling.
What was even happening?
