Plaid is a main theme, but it isn't strictly necessary. It will need some other patterns with detail like the plaid. Such as stripes, or a band shirt.

I think it was more of a Nirvana thing than a grunge thing in general. T-shirts and skinny jeans usually work universally for punk scenes as well.

I would totally recommend looking in the asset shop then! Tons of free vector plaid patterns so you can adjust them to the exact scale you'd like it!
