Hey everyone, just always wondering, what do other people do while they write? I personally mostly write with music without lyrics, or in languages I don't understand, because if there are lyrics I do understand, it interrupts my thought flow. Something about having the music going helps me get into a flow occasionally.

In silence and listening to music. I can listen to music while writing poetry, but with my stories I find it distracting.
One thing I find is that I tend to listen to the same genre during an entire novel of writing. My first novel was just the BotW and Pokemon Soundtracks. My second novel has been Japanese Electro Swing. Something about the same style of music gets my brain chugging to write. I've basically trained it to start wanting to write when I hear it.

I need some kind of music playing, usually with lyrics, to help me concentrate. If I try to work in silence my mind runs around like an ADHD squirrel on crack. Having something for the idle part of my mind to focus on while I write really helps.

Distractions being sounds that aren't music or my own thoughts. I will play music as loud as it takes to deaf the distractions, with or without lyrics.

I use music because I need to elicit a very particular feeling for various scenes to really write particular scenes to motivate me, and I need to get said scene done before the song's effect runs out (after listening to a bunch of times). I also use my mental breakdowns. Let me tell you, it is the best form of motivation, material, and inspiration for a psychological horror story, particularly to the tune of music.

If I don't listen to music at all times, I lose my mind. So I'm always listening to music due to that. Same language, unknown language, instrumental, I listen to it all, and it makes very little if any difference. Lately I've been listening to Heilung and Munknorr.

Interesting. That's quite different to what I am used to. I would never stay in a specific genre... Huh. Cool.

Before I had a kid, I would light a candle and drink some tea while writing in a paper notebook. Then, I had to use a c-hold on my breasts for 40 hours a week to get a proper latch. Now, the kid grabs pencils out of my hand. With great children comes great sacrifice.

I mostly listen to music (the genre that I want to listen at that particular day...even those that are not in my language), and sometimes, sing along loudly to the lyrics while typing. It drowns everything around me and increases my focus.

I would usually begin with having a blutopfer to some satanic entity or eldritch monstrosity to give enlighten my feeble, mortal mind. Then, the weeping of the suffering, tormented souls will serve as a great background music that will help me write.

Also, yes. It was song with lyrics.

Everything but the fifth. Just today, I even managed to finish two chapters' worth of work while me and my family shopped for furniture, lol.

What I listen to depends on how tired and spacey I'm feeling at the time. When I'm focusing reasonably well, I can listen to more lively music without lyrics (like lo-fi or epic music). Less well, I need more subdued music (like solo piano or classical guitar). If I'm having trouble concentrating at all, I switch to white noise and binaural beats.

I also write in silence sometimes when I'm focusing so well that my music runs out and I don't notice.... :blobrofl:
