For the longest time, I've been watching movie without any subtitle. It just feels more... natural that way. I always find subtitle distracting from the cinematography aesthetic. I love seeing the nonverbal communication the actors portray. It fills my mind with imagination and visual imagery.
But, this comes at a cost: it's hard to understand the nitty-gritty of certain kinds of movie, like fantasy or historical or any movies where the actors mumble their dialogue.
Recently, I've tried rewatching The Witcher with subtitle on, and oh man, what a different it makes. Do note, though, English is not my first language, but I'd like to believe I'm quite fluent to some extent. I can hold any level of conversation with the native speaker, my accent usually a mix of British, American, Scottish, and Australian (literally every accent I've been exposed to), but mostly Brit-American dominant (or so I've been told).
The problem is, now I'm faced with a hard choice: should I or should I not use subtitle?
Both of them have pros and cons.
Like I said, watching with subtitle would help me understand every little detail of the story—especially the foreign fantasy names and accents and slangs—but at the same time, I don't get much of the visual experience, anymore. Now, you might argue this is a skill and proficiency issue. "You're just not used to it," you might say. That's true, I can understand that, but I still believe no matter how good you are at reading subtitle, it will rob you of the visual experience to some extent.
Watching a movie for me is like living in another world; we don't understand everything in real life, that's why it's so fun. The world is just full of wonder and mystery and what-the-fuck moments.
For my curiosity: do you use subtitle when watching movies, especially fantasy genre?
