Do you think that Italian can be used as a fantasy rune language? I have this idea for my next story, in which the MC will dig up the language of a hero from another world and use it for spell making. (No, the story is not Isekai. The MC is born and raised in Tralalandia.) You know, so that no one can understand what the rune sheet is about, until it is too late. And I think I can mix in the ghost of the Hero from Earth into the mixture. It could be, that the Hero is trapped between worlds and has unfinished business.

I have been learning Italian since the 28th of October, mostly with the Paul Noble courses and Multilingua, and videos about pronunciation on YouTube, but I don't think I will make any substantial progress unless I start writing in the language. That is how I got better at German after years of little to no progress.

Do you think it is too much of a stretch to write such a story? Italian is such a beautiful language, and the grammar is not as complicated as German, or at least I haven't gotten to the point where it gets deep and shows me a bunch of cases out of the nothingness.

I hope you are having a great day!

Nah. Lots of stories already use languages like Latin for spell invocations.

Or if you're really feeling the worldbuilding, you could always just make up a language of your own.
I don't see a point of making a nonsense language. The languages which are already on this planet are beautiful enough.

If you want a simple solution for a rune language that doesn't require a lot of work for you, then sure, go for it. It obviously has quite a few downsides (most notably the fact that people who speak the language will have things kinda spoiled), but it's been done and it's not a bad solution.

I've personally read a story that used Polish as a magical language, and it put me off at first, but later I was like, whatever. It's Polish, so what? It's not in the setting, that's what matters.

My friends are currently dying of laughter from the idea of an Italian stereotype based magic system/world.

  1. Pastapharianism is the main religion/cult
  2. Italy is the last surviving country of a marinara based apocalypse
  3. Fish are made of bread
  4. Mama mia is ancient Eldritch blessing/curse
  5. Pasta is healing because it is part of the giant spaghetti god
  6. Spells are cast by doing the Italian hand motion.

I... don't intend to use any stereotypes because I don't know many stereotypes that have anything to do with Italian. It is simply mind-blowing how you can share a continent with a country and know next to nothing about it, but that they make good music. Something I will fix as I go along.
I strongly disagree.
I politely disagree with your disagreement and am ready to hear your contra arguments.

As an Italian, all the stereotypes are true to some degree, except the pastapharianism. Just play O sole mio and you'll be welcomed with open arms.

As someone who did quite a number of studying into creating magic system, I don't understand why you need to be afraid of using Italian as (as you said) a rune.

A rune is an enchantment putting on an object using letters of a language. It was popularly called rune because runic enchantment (enchantment using runic alphabets) is the most popular among the fantasy sector. A rune (as in enchantment) is merely a magic imprinted into a physical medium. It does not means the germanic language itself.

This is like battleship was once called Dreadnought because the HMS Dreadnought was a popular warship and many warships after it was designed with the Dreadnought as the inspiration.

Yes, any language can. Although you might need to find a way to justify in the world.

That joke hits better in the original Quenya.

Go for it! You might lose some immersion among readers who have some Italian language knowledge, but fuck it, write what you're excited about.
