Do you drop a story if one specific character dies?

This goes with watching film and other media. Other than the MC, would you drop a series because someone, not the MC dies, or do you get annoyed if that character does not appear as often like the MC does. I can understand if that character dies, but if he doesn’t appear frequently you want that character to override the MC’s status, do you get annoyed?

I don’t, I tend to tolerate the MC or like them. Take One Piece. I like Zoro, but I won’t be annoyed if he’s not actively on screen. Luffy is the MC after all.

It depends. I used to care about it when I was younger, but nowadays I think is the norm if some beloved character dies. I mean, writers do that on purpose sometimes.

I think if the story is interesting, even the MC dying wouldn't stop me from watching/reading. But sometimes it feels like the author is just killing off some characters just for the sake of killing them and it feels cheap. I think each character should serve a purpose in the story, even minor ones, and their deaths should accomplish something other than just pissing the reader off.

I think death of a character, if done well, can be amazing and even draw me deeper into a story, even if it was my favorite character. On the other hand, it can be done in poor taste or even be meaningless. That's when it starts to push me away.

I wouldn't drop if the character dies, but I would if it was done very poorly. Nowadays I'm also less tolerant of stories that kill the characters left and right for no other reason, but shock value and wanting to be edgy.

Depends on the rest of the story, really. There was one smut story on here I was enjoying, but a large part of my enjoyment besides the smut was the struggles of one particular character. She was weaker than the other main cast characters, and was struggling with the newfound lusts the MC was awakening in her, but I really liked how she was the only one with a goal of primarily saving someone else, namely her sister. I felt she was helping the MC think about something other than getting her d*** wet: Heavens know her body guard was nearly nihilistic and the mage was only focused on getting used by the MC.

Well. Needless to say she dies, and I have lost 90% of my interest in the story. I haven't even thought of it in like a year until I saw this topic, so now I'm going to go check and see if the author pulled a Dues Ex Machina and brought her back somehow. Only way I see myself continuing the story.

It depends on how well the producers managed the death.

Look at one example: In stranger things, I would not mind if the whole cast died even though I like all of them. I even wanted them to kill Steve in the 4 season because it would make sense , but it didn't happen. The producers did a good job in this scenario.

Now, look at the joke that TWD turned into after they killed Carl. I didn't care much about Glenn's death because I knew from the comics it would happen and , again , made sense considering the context. Also didn't mind about any other death even though I cared about the characters.

BUT, killing Carl killed any passion I had for the series. It didn't make sense , because In the source material ( and even on the TV series) he was clearly being molded into being the next Rick, but then died out of nowhere.

So I dropped TWD and never watched again. I don't regret it because , from what I heard , the show went downhill since killing Carl.

Anyway, the context on why they killed the character matters more than anything else. So yeah, I would drop a series without a second thought if they pulled some crap like that.

I dropped ragna crimson when the rayman princess died. From what I heard it's a bait and switch and she's still alive but I'm still pissed so I'm not gonna pick it back up any time soon.

Pretty sure they killed off carl because the actor was turning 18 and they don't want to pay extra. Dude was pretty pissed too because he bought a house and went to a college/university near the set.

No, but if the circumstances of the death are particular gruesome or traumatic then I'd stop. I loved banana fish, but then Shorter (best friend) died when I was deeply invested. The mature content (psychological) of the series was too much for me to handle.

No matter how good the death is, If my fav character died, I have a major chance of dropping it.

My favorite character of all time died... then she revived and became a god, twice. So, I didn't know what to feel about it and kept watching, I guess. (And yes, I would absolutely drop it if she died for good.)

*ahem*
Our beloved member, Hazel (@Sunshine_Inferno) picks up: one (1) young adult romance novel.

Hazel: *opens book and reads*
VERY likeable love interest (e.g. smart, funny, maybe even - dare I say it - handsome - ): *dies*
Hazel: [Author's name], I hate you forever! I shall never read anything you write ever again! *throws book at wall and goes to sulk in bedroom*

20 minutes later...

Hazel: *comes out of bedroom, snatches book, and proceeds to binge-read the last 50 pages of the novel with astonishing fervor*
*finishes book and still hates author*
Hazel: Well [BLEEP!], I hate [Author's name]!

In other words, if a character I like dies, I'll continue reading anyway because it just sort of adds to the suspense. And you have to know if they're really dead, right? Sometimes they're reincarnated or something. (And sometimes they're not, which means you still hate the author forever, but at least you finished the book.)

In he who fights with monsters when a certain person's brother dies I got bummed out. But it turned out to be the beginning of the end of the enjoyment of that novel. After that arc was completed I didn't really have any desire to continue.

Major character death is great! Please kill your major characters, especially if it would make sense for them to die.

Characters that should've died/been killed/so on and so forth living is more likely to turn a reader like me away.

And also, stay dead please. Ass-pull resurrections are even more upsetting to my ilk than the death was
