To be quite honest, I am not (or rather, no longer) a big reader anymore. But one thing that always strikes me as easy-to-read is perhaps contemporary fiction set in a very close-to-home kinda way. Big fan of soft sci-fi and low fantasy, as well as comedic takes on alternate history. Right now, a personal favorite author of mine is Haruki Murakami, with local authors from my home country behind him on my list. I'd really like to know about what your opinions, experience and writing tips and tricks on exciting contemporary fiction.

Plus, I wanna make friends with y'all  :blob_no:

Some are good, some are not that great. It depends on the genre. The most recent contemporary fiction book I've read was Elementary Particles by Michelle Houellebecq, and it was already pretty polarizing. I personally very much enjoyed it, but I can see how some people would not.

Ooh I've heard of that author before, I forgot when and why, but I have a feeling it wasn't good. But the book u mentioned, I looked it up. The premise itself is quite...fascinating, might be worth looking more into. Thanks for mentioning it.

I don't read any contemporary fiction, but I do watch one called "life of pi", I think there's a book version too. Also, life of pi is an amazing film \o/

P.s. Life of pi is contemporary fiction, right?
P.s.s I want to make friends with you too

Yes I've watched it before, a very cool idea abt the journey and struggles of a guy stuck at sea with a tiger.

I don't really read contemporary fiction but from I looked up this should be sort of good enough:

In Fact: The Best of Creative NonFiction, Edited by Lee Gutkind

It's a bundle of shorter stories. You can read a couple to see if it is something that would be acceptable.

Did you get this from a study in school/college? Looks very informative. I really want to read this one, I think it can teach a lot. Did you already read it?

I did get it for a public speaking class. As for informative, there is notes at the end by the authors of each story on how they went about it. My favorites are the one where a woman went through a traditional jewish divorce and how her study mates and teacher kept telling her that she wasn't being objective enough. How that transforms the writing into something that can be understood by average readers like ourselves in order to understand what's happening. Or the guy with cerebral palsy that writes one paragraph at a time and when a deadline comes up he makes a mishmash of everything he has written into something clear for the readers. Although short in the explanations, there are several of them from different types of authors with different subject matters.

Yo, nice! Did you get a pdf for it? Or did you find a physical copy?

The reviews sound fantastic. Sadly there's little to no chance of me getting a copy of it :blob_cringe:. Would you mind telling me a bit more about it?
Sure! It's written in a blend of first and second person, so you can picture people from your life as the characters or picture them as ethereal beings, bodies stripped away, to the very core of their essence. Here's one of Hanarejima's short stories you can read for free:

That's really good! Stuff like this, written in 2nd person, is so easy to slip into especially considering how short it is. It really has a nice feel to it, you can actually perceive it's world much better. But personally I can't imagine reading a super long 2nd person story, let alone write one.
