So this is my first novel and i think i have done a pretty decent job so far but i am a little confused. I have the story in mind but i really want to add a slight dark tone to it. The problem is i don't know how to go about it. Should i just forget the dark tone and keep doing what i have been doing? I have no prior writing experience to this.

Why do you want to add a dark tone? Is there a reason for it? Character growth? Vengeance arc? Or just to have your story feel more "mature"?

It sorta depends on what dark tone you want to go with, like do you want it to go just a bit darker, or really, really dark. The kind of dark tone you want to go for also matters in the context of your novel such as death, slavery, existentialism, to list a couple. Perhaps you could elaborate so I, or the others could have a better insight

... write what flows, as long as it seems decent to you. Maybe.

Audience expectations on how you will deliver on past promises is important. Think of how Game of Thrones ruined everything with a random dragon rampage, mad queen, and trying to ‘subvert’ the payoff we were hoping for.

Though that is an old example you probably won’t get, simply consider where you are at and whether you are going to make this temporary or a new status quo. If it’s only a scene, it should not overstay its welcome. If it’s a change in status quo, then the turning point must be strong.

Write what you know and don’t go too deep into topics you yourself don’t quite understand. As long as you do that, you will be able to come up with ways to fix things even if it turns out becoming different than originally intended.

Just don’t stray too far from what you were already building towards.

If you're inexperienced, don't dive too deep into the psychological strains your character could face. Even if you have experience with anxiety, trauma, or depression, you need to practice proper flow and diction so that it's coherent to your reader(s).

However, as a writer whose characters and stories always have a dark tone or psychological element, I'd be happy to review any ideas you may deliberate on.

I actually have a serious story in mind but I also don't want to stray away from comedy. So I don't know what to do

Sorry for the late reply "The Faker" is an original thought of mine on how real life is now-a-days.

More like betrayal later on with one of the close characters building up to a plot twist for the MC.

More on the lines of maturity and character growth

You are one man depicting one of the titles Humanity has. Do not forget, you are part of what you criticize.

This'll be thought-provoking, I'll keep this short.

Remind yourself that at some point, you might become the thing you hated most, the thing you criticized on a random site on the internet.

The internet is magical. Whether it be a news of a slaughter on the loose, a groomer trying to bait its victim on an online chatroom, or a mass-gathering demonstration on the way to be realized, never forget that every kind of thing can and will exist on the internet.

You are big. Whenever you feel the need for motivational words, read one, and only one motivational word. Tough people receive what is available, not what they want. Look onto more motivational words, and you'll instead be one sloth with the skin of a real person.

I am giving you something that will surely trigger some ideas. The online world is far harsher than the real life, somehow. Cancel culture exists, need I say more?

That is all, stay safe.

Wow man I didn't think you would go this far. I'm actually really surprised and yes I haven't forgotten what I am.

Yeah, me neither. But seiing my country and others not enjoying their life itches me. Like, why? You have a god, you worship em, and they give you life. Do not bring down life onto rationality, that's just morbidly absurd.

And good to know you still remember yourself. ?

Never force the story unless you really know exactly what you want to do with it. Never. If the story NEEDS to be darker, it will find a way, or you will find a way to tell it without the darkness you felt it needed.

Now, sometimes a story will get away from you - I had one that got so dark, I had to step away from it, and by the time I felt up to going back to it, I found I had lost the drive it was saved on.
