Author Name: FleecedSheep
Profession: Author
Preferred Art Style: Realist/Abstract?
Story: Magical Girl City: Empire of Ice
Request: I'd like a novel cover, more specifically, I was thinking of having a cover drawn of the opening sequence for my story. Specifics below.

The main character is driving down a desert highway, around midnight. Their going full throttle, pedal to the metal without pause. It's the night of the full moon, set against a starless night. As they're hurtling down the road a fog rolls in obscuring their vision. Shortly after, a figure darts onto the road, the main character jerks the wheel and catches a glimpse of the figure right before they crash, the figure being a rabbit.

More, more specifically... I'd like to catch that moment when the driver notices the rabbit more from an outsider's point of view. The rabbit itself isn't just a rabbit, but a mascot, or rather, a kind of god-like entity going out of its way to spirit away the main character at that moment by inciting an accident. The perspective, if R were to be the rabbit, C the car, and P, for perspective, it would look like something like...

-------------R ----------C
-----------/
---------P
So, we'd get a bit of an angle on the rabbit, and a bit of the front of the car, along with a side profile of it, assuming my half-rate attempt at an example posted correctly. Without being head on, which would result in the viewer being blinded by the headlights, and would hopefully, give a good view of the moon and sky in the background. It will probably look skewed, and probably really off, which is partially why I had it marked as abstract.

As for why the piece is marked Realist and Abstract, despite them being opposing styles is because I want a bit of a clash between the two. The rabbit itself needs to look semi-realist, along with the area around them, as a kind of like bubble, or domain. Opposite of it, would be the moon, which would be the central part of the abstract part of the piece. The two would clash, roughly around central part of the piece, probably with the car at the center.

The idea is to create a kind of, juxtaposition between what Main Character knows and what will be, and also to give the rabbit a sense of otherness to the piece as a whole. Furthermore, the rabbit and moon should be similar colors, with the rabbit being a source of light, while the moon struggles against the darker tones of the hungering night sky.

The car itself is an older model, think a 90's Toyota Corolla, or something equally legally distinct. Like an old boxy type car made to last for hundreds of thousands of miles without any real care. As for colors of the vehicle, something striking might work, to better clash against the darker tones of the piece and make it stand out against the fog. It should look aged, weathered, but not in disrepair. Kind of like an old army vet ready to kick the bucket. Been to hell and back but can still pack a punch.

Cabin would be slightly lit up, probably either due to the headlights, on high beams reflecting back, or because of the light given off by the rabbit. The driver's features would be indistinct, maybe make them mess of black and red marks, wearing a disheveled suit coated in blood. Possibly have piercing blue eyes that cut through it all...

Anything outside the rabbit's light should be distorted, partially to deal with the skewed perspective and to help with the overall vibe of the piece. If there is room in the background, maybe have distorted shapes that were originally cacti, make them monstrous, exact details for this really don't matter, just that it looks wrong. Could further be juxtaposed by having some of the figures be inside the rabbit's domain to showcase the distortion of the fog.

The overall tone should probably be foreboding, ominous, probably like something out of a nightmare or a bad trip.

And that should be it for the details of the piece. Honestly, I don't have high expectations for it, partially because it is experimental, and also because I don't have the money to make sure it's just right. I'd like to be able to say that money is of no object, that the sky is the limit, so long as it's done right, that I'd pay anything...

That's not the case unfortunately. My soft cap is set at $100.00 USD. I can go up to $200.00 USD, but that's likely to be my hard limit. Anymore and I might need to postpone the commission, and I wanted to get something decent before I try and get this story posted on Royal Road, so as to give it a chance.

Technically, even spending this much money on this is a bit irresponsible, but good art deserves good prices, and well, I don't have that much money, but I'll get what I can get.

For the commission, just let me know what you would charge, and post some examples you have that you think might fit the theme of the piece. I'm not married to the exact style, and if you have better ideas on how this can be made into something good, well, I'll leave that up to you to try and convince me. If you do typesetting, or know someone that does it, I'd like something in the format of Title, Written By, and possibly Art by, or Illustrated by, if you want to give yourself some extra visiblity. I can pay a bit extra for type setting if need be, and I'd like, if possible, a clean version, along with a titled version.

I do plan to post the finished piece on the author general tab, just to kind of show off, so, keep that in mind.

As a warning, this is my first commission. This is also my first thread on this forum, I'm a... somewhat active author? I have a completed story, it's not worth reading, and the story I'm commissioning art for is one I've recently started posting. The metrics are looking... okay, and so I figured I'd go the distance with it. And even if I think my writing is, not good, I promised myself I'd give it a chance, so commissioning an art piece seemed like a good way to go, and if it never goes anywhere, then I can say I at least tried.

Discussion is welcome, tips or advice are also welcome. Please don't DM, Direct Message, me unless it pertains to exact details on the commission. To add to the annoyance, I don't really have any socials. No fakebook, no twitter, nothing. I created a PayPal, specifically to pay for this commission, if need be, and I do have a business email set up for this, and for my work as an author. As for response time, I try to log in at least once a day, and I will try to log in more, knowing that I have a commission open.

If I made any mistakes, or if somehow, I was incorrect posting here, let me know so that I can go and bury myself in some hole somewhere. Above all, I want this to be a good experience for everyone involved, if possible.

Hey FleecedSheep. I really liked your concept, especially the rabbit and moon contrast, the idea is very creative. I’m an artist and can draw in different styles, including both Realist and Abstract. If you’d like, I can create the cover art for your story. Your vision is very clear, and I believe I can visualize it well. If you’re interested, we can discuss the details further.

Be weary of AI art scammers, buddy.
I'm aware, thank you for the show of concern. It's part of the reason why I put instructions into the post. I'm actually surprised it took this long for one to take a bite.

You are in the right place to post it here, although it isn't done so often anymore ever since the scammers went a bit awol around these parts.

I am not much to much one for abstract art.
I draw more towards realism, so if you are okay with something more in the terms of semi-Realism my personal style is more like the two added example images below. I do switch through styles though so it is no problem to adjust more towards a style if you have something specific in mind.

If it's up your angle feel free to DM me and ask about whatever details you want.

Could I possibly get an estimate for the cost? A ballpark is fine. As for style, I don't really have a strong leaning towards any specific style. Admittedly, the potential cost might shift my expectations a bit.

I also wasn't aware of just how bad the bot situation had gotten. I never received so many scam messages back when I posted my first story, almost... a year and a half ago... didn't realize it was that long ago... Either way, I've gotten a lot more messages compared to then. Just didn't realize it was that prevalent. It's kind of silly.

Yeah the bots have gotten a really badly out of hand, especially lately.

I usually charge between 80-100 as a standing base price for a full cover. I do go up and down a little depending on the complexity of the piece and how many changes you make during the process.

Also to avoid scamming for both sides I do write up contracts with payment details since I have gotten tired of dealing with the bots and that method works surprisingly well.

Those details are generally hammered out individually the same as a full price
(This may sound a but...I guess somewhere between random and professional, but fact is that does scare the scammers out most of the time.) But honestly for more detail I'd really prefer to do this in DM if you are interested.

Just wanted to make sure it was within my stated budget before I commit, I could go over a hundred, but I'd have to start doing some, uh, creative accounting with my bills and such. I don't mind moving into DM's and admittedly, I'm not too sure how that goes, since it appears the forum and the main site appear to have different systems in place.

On that note, to minimize the whole telegram situation, is there a time you'd like to schedule for us to message? It's fine if your fine with the whole back and forth over days, but if you'd like to speak with me when I'm available and get everything squared off, just DM me the details and we can work something out.

As to the contract, I don't mind. If anything, I know a contract does better to protect us both if something were to happen. As this is my first time, I might need to be walked through the process a bit though.

Lastly, yeah, dealing with bots and scammers is tiring. I had one that caught me at an awkward time, when I was uploading and scheduling chapter drops for both my patreon and for here. It took like, six hours, mainly because patreon decided to be annoying and not save the uploads, forcing me to go back and re-upload them, and I also had to start setting up the advance chapters, and the whole time I kept pointing the scammer to this post and telling them to follow the instructions within. Shocker, they did everything but follow the instructions. It was kind of impressive, in a dumb sort of way. Eventually I just stopped responding and blocked them.

Can I still try this one?

Lemme get some pencils done first.
My apologies, you are a bit late. You can go ahead and follow the instructions if you want, post some examples and a price point. You can take it as free advertising, at least until I have the thread closed when the commission is completed. Which, when the commission is completed, I do plan to post the finished product here before asking the thread to be closed.

This also applies to any other prospective artist that may see this post going forward. If something changes, I'll be sure to make a post regardless.

Commission Complete! Finished piece is under spoiler tag, if anyone was curious. Assuming the link works... Also, I'm not sure how to either close, or lock this thread.

@Thorkell_40k does good art but don't know if they are open for commissions rn.
