Cartoons has been my childhood honestly(mostly might be in thesame boat). Anime was like a part of my life from school to high school and even half of uni. Which do think which medium has better story telling and different hidden messages etc. Looking back I find cartoons for me that have more depth and great messages than most animes.
Likefor example

Samurai jack
Courage the cowardly dog
Ed edd eddy.
Avatar etc
Castlevania

Although anime clearly has mature themes i feel like they are sometimes a hit or miss. Plus todays anime shows are very meh. I stopped watching them 7 months ago only dipping my self for 2 shows.

Legend of the galactic heroes
Vinland sage.
These are just peak shows imo. What do you guys think?

Anime because it has a longer history in aiming for all-ages than cartoons which were predominantly aimed at kids.

Als the:

Take is not correct.

Every year, there are only a handful of anime shows that are great and can stand the test of time. The rest are what you call meh. This was the same in 2012, 2006, 2000, 1996, and so on and so on. Only, the later you come in, the more ever-green titles you can binge-watch before running out of classics and having to follow the still ongoing seasons, waiting for another banger.

Older cartoons were amazing and there are a few good stories among newer cartoons but anime usually has more interesting and thought provoking stories along with great art(most of the time). The cal art style that most modern cartoons use is shit in my opinion.

Anime, of course. Cartoon was originally supposed to be just funny animation and nothing else. But anime has always been a form of storytelling. Both of them are very distinct from one another back in the day. Anime was originated from Japan, covering all sorts of subjects, with different demographics. The western was mostly for kids.

Cartoon was originally supposed to be just funny animation and nothing else
from the very beginning they were used as far more than just funny animation.
During the 17th century, the origins of the modern cartoon began as caricatures. Artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Lorenzo Benini used caricatures to provide definite shape and form to the features of their subject. However, it was William Hogarth who developed the pictorial satire, which became the precursor to the development of political and editorial cartoons.

It was also during the same era where cartoonists introduced a playful and whimsical style that depicted caricatures. They drew cartoon characters and associated them with humor to present social events and the latest fashions. During the French Revolution (1789-1799), cartoonists used their productions as a form of satirical propaganda.

Cartoons were also used as a powerful means of depicting the events that occurred during the American Civil War. Abraham Lincoln was a prominent figure of those cartoons. By the mid-19th century, a German-American cartoonist named Thomas Nast applied the realistic-looking German drawing and sketching technique to his political cartoons in America, which redefined American cartooning. His 160 cartoons relentlessly campaigned against the “Tweed machine” in New York City. These cartoons were instrumental in the downfall of the corrupt political organization Tammany Hall and the eventual arrest of its leader, “Boss Tweed” (William Magear Tweed in real life)
And when animation was developed it didn't take long for them to be used to convey rather serious stories.
There are plenty good cartoons that have very deep stories.
