Database server is down but the web server is up -- that's why you can see the front page for your stories but not any data associated with it.
Hopefully nothing is seriously wrong with the database, but even if that happened, there would usually be a backup.

A DDoS would just shut SH's servers down with an abundance of trafficky nonsense, shouldn't have any access to the data stored on there,
Data getting deleted would be a separate thing from the DDoS,

When a few lucky ones can still access the site, then it’s usually ddos attack.

if the data server is down then cloud fare usually shows up and states that the data server does not respond
