Your story is definitely LitRPG. You use a system of numbers and levels to determine who someone is and how they compare to others. That's basic LitRPG.

You're not in a video game world. So you're not GameLit, but you're also not likely to find yourself lumped in with traditional fantasy.

Its not a bad thing. Just how it is.

LitRPG isn't perfectly uniform. But based on what I've seen, you're either going to be writing a vague LitRPG or probably going to be considered one by readers
ok. guess thats that then. thanks ALOT for your insights fairemont. in the end it ended up being a LitRPG?

Might be more "GameLit" than "LitRPG" - had someone explain the difference to me a few months back (my one foray into that space is kind of halfway between), but don't recall it exactly.

I don't think that did a very good job of explaining GameLit then. How can you have GameLit without a game world?

yeah the dungeons I told you about are actually mines stretched into the ground with an ancient technological bunker being guarded by monsters or rather beasts living underground. But I guess rest of the things like guild and magic etc. can make it GameLit.

is there anyway we can jump out of both and create a new category in itself? or are we stuck with what already rolls? i want it to be unique. how else does this make it unique? may be instead of dungeons i connect some portal to another world which if not cleared within timeframe can cause worlds to collide or leave the adventurers in another world?

I wouldn't worry too much about genre until you're ready to publish. At that point you should have enough content to assess for yourself what genres you might fall into.

As for being unique, it has its pros and cons. Id say diverging too much from what readers are looking for and what they expect is riskier that. It is beneficial.

Write what you want, how you want it, and see where it goes. If it is unique, then so be it!
