AI for your characters?

Hey guys, what do you think about using AI to give your readers an idea about how your characters look? I'm so bad at drawing and having others to draw it for you costs a fortune. It's a dilemma to me, and I was hoping you all could give some opinion on whether I should just keep doing it or else . . .

Sadly AI can't generate my characters, so I won't do it. If you are okay with results, go ahead and do it.

I mean personally I do it constantly. I enjoy playing with AI art generators. It doesn’t necessarily result in perfect art, but with enough iterations you can get a decent enough pic that conveys the vibes you want using whatever program you like. Even Bing ai. Adequate quality to serve as a visual aid is 100% attainable for most basically human looking people. The more unique/specific a result you want, the harder it will be.

As to whether it’s moral/ethical? There are definitely people who will recoil in disgust if they see you using ai art. I’ve never had someone actually voice this to me or tell me that they stopped reading because of ai art, but I imagine some have. Make your own decision as to whether or not it itches your conscience.

Are your characters humans or something there are a lot of drawing of? Because it can handle brown hair, brown eyes and clothing well but stuff more rare it struggles with.

I think the only time moral/ethical comes into play is monetization. People put their stuff out there for others to see but they reserve the rights. So while it might not be possible for them to get a cut of money used for people that used to train an AI because that is hard to tell, knowing that money is being made with copyrighted images without approval is not fair use.

With that consideration you could also dislike AI for the use itself, even if it might be considered 'fair' by legal standards.

AI graphics are a tool, after all. If you blindly order it to do a task and your creativity is limited only to changing the seed, it is not a good option. If only because on the next illustration your hero will be completely different. You should try to work out the details you need a little bit with the help of additional functions. Collect your own small set of faces of one character. This will help you when using different controllers to prescribe it to the desired scene. Also, it will be almost authorial, because if you only refer to the description of the part in your queries and not the author or authorial style, that element is likely to be a mixed bag. It's best to take anonymized photos and convert them with AI filters into a drawing. There are many such add-ons on civitai. It's limited to stable diffusion, but makes you feel less dependent.

I already have illustrations from actual artists. I might use AI in a few years when it gets good enough to handle multiple characters. Right now, I'm pretty much just collecting daily credits and playing with any new non-premium features.
