If someone praises a story without acknowledging the author, does the author feel like his story is getting pleasured by someone else?
I mean... I like it when my story, all my stories give pleasure to others... it makes me feel good when others are pleasured by my... stories...

Oh GAWD! I HAVE BEEN NTR'D AND I LIKED IT!!!

I guess so. This also explains why I haven't let others read the garbage I've written. I'm not ready for my creation to pleasure others.

I hate it when people praise me for working hard as if I have no talent.

I hate when people praise me... I just want positive affirmations.

I hate when people praise me. I want hate-nya.

Going back to the topic at hand, I noticed that the exercise that helps me the most to improve my writing is narrating what I'm doing in my head.

Like... When I'm cooking : She opened the cupboard to check what was inside, probably searching for her handy pan that was so old the paint peeled. After finding it and putting it on the stove, she then bent down to grab the glass bottle of olive oil...

And you just narrate what you do, it helps quite a lot. Paying attention to your conversations with friends and colleagues helps to write realistic dialogues.

My housemate, who is a very good chess player, always said that the game strengthens observational skills.
I myself love crime scenes and murder-porn, as you always see or understand something else that you didn't the first time around.
I do agree that to write well, you really need to know a good deal about the world around you.
But it's not just that, because there's whole other worlds out there we don't know a thing about, and we challenge our creativity by CREATING those things we don't know. So, a heightened sense of observation + high degree of creativity = One very good author.
