A year ago, I posted a thread here asking if stories where both the male and female protagonists have their own harems while also loving each other, actually exist. Many responses said it would be difficult to write and hard to justify in terms of world-building, since most settings aren’t structured to accommodate two central harem leaders.

But I think I’ve found a potential solution: What if the MC and FMC are married (or dating) and start playing an immersive VR MMO where they can romance and engage in smut with NPCs?

This setup could solve several issues with a double harem story, right? The real-world relationship remains intact, while the in-game dynamics allow for separate harems without the usual complications. Plus, the VR setting justifies the unconventional structure.

What do you all think? Would this work? What more do you think I am overlooking?

TBH, I don't think it would act out the way you think. Perspective wise, I does logically sound plausible but on moral side, I would definitely think it counts as NTR in my case. While technically it isn't cheating, its basically just asking you to be unfaithful even if those people are just fictional characters.

Basically comparing them to cheating your spouse in a dream and telling him that your still faithful.

Harem is already considered wrong despite the logical standards of reproduction being correct but when you take into account the moral choice, you will still have problems even if its a dream or in a VR.

I can already imagine a scenario with this example.

Boyfriend: Babe. I got a harem in a game, but don't worry. I'm still faithful to you in RL.

Girlfriend: Same Babe. I also got a harem as well. Technically they are hotter than you but I'm still faithful to our relationship.

I think you're overthinking things a little IMO. If you want to write a story where a man and a woman have their own harems, set it up as a premis and then see how the MC or FMC overcomes the difficulties involved.

Make a world where your premise is possible without making it VR. What would be the implications? How would the characters live in that world? How does a countercultural MC or FMC overcome the adversity.

The idea itself is what makes it interesting because it's hard. Don't hand wave the best thing about your story.

My point is - don't let a bunch of people online stop you from capturing the story you want to write. It's your world, not theirs. The true validation of your creation is pageviews and likes not fellow authors.
