The story is set in a world were people make contracts with animal spirits and act as either their proxy ,avatar or successor and the protagonist is contracted with a bat spirit .
The plot was that there was a war well before the story between the mammal spirits and bird spirits where the bats spirits(and their avatars and contractors) fought on both sides and changed their sides again and again which gave them a reputation for being back stabbing and distrust after the war was over and peace was made between the mammal spirits and avian spirits after the war the bat spirits and some other spirits were for some reason slaughtered by other spirits so the protagonist who is the last of the tribe which made a contract with the bat spirits goes on to find out about why his tribes patron spirits were wiped out .
The protagonist was capable of transformation and had very corrosive blood.

The writing style also had a very folk Lore like vibe to it
