Are info dumps required for world building? (OPINION)

I think it’s best to avoid them as much as possible, and limit their length and find a way to splice them into narrative. Personally, I want reading a book to be an act of discovery. I don’t want to have it all explained to me. Well said.

    Who inspires you?

Dude, another Zelazny fan! He was an absolute treasure. I almost put him on my list too but I like Gene Wolfe just a bit more fore the same reasons. I havent dug inti the Amber series yet tho. But I love Lord of Light and This Immortal, and Creatures of Light and Darkness is one of my favorite...

    Who inspires you?

Name your top five writers who have inspired you the most, with the top single reason for each. I'll go first. William Blake, for his unmatched imagination (he wasn't just a genius, he was an EPIC genius). Sylvia Plath, for how powerfully she communicated emotions (may she rest in peace). Gene...

Full Circle: Novels influenced video games. Can video games now influence novels?

I always wondered if analyzing gameplay could somehow help a writer with constructing their combat scenes. And there is a treasure trove of characters and character dynamics to draw from. I also think about how exciting it would be to read a book with the kind of heavy atmosphere some games...

Full Circle: Novels influenced video games. Can video games now influence novels?

I started a thread on the idea of SoulsBorne style literature, and there already a number of great posts. I’d like to expand the discussion to how we can be influenced by video games in general in our stories. The first point I would like to bring up, is that what works in a game will not always...

Honestly, those both sound like books I’d like to read. What I’ve done with my experiment in this is determine how much each character knows, what they don’t want the MC to know, or how much they have reason to reveal, along with how much the MC is interested and will actually retain, then made...

No offense taken. And while I like Vaati, he’s my least favorite Souls youtuber because he just rehashes plot points. I totally agree that what works for a game won’t work in a book if applied directly. That is definitely a bad idea. What I’m talking about is examining the story telling...

I’ve noticed the nay sayers don’t offer any reasons why. I’m curious to know what would make it a bad idea.

    Recommend me something good....

The Book Of The New Sun by Gene Wolfe. It hits all the notes you listed, and is also one of the most atmospheric and uniquely written series out there.

Edgy teen writing?. Yuk lol. I'm thinking on a more, I dunno, technique level? What intrigues me about the Souls games is how many alternatives to exposition it uses. They actually have very rich and developed narratives, but unconventional delivery, so I like the idea of there being more to a...

Which are better, pirate's or Ninja's?

Think about their private lives. Pirates dont have one. They are always drunk thieves who live in a cramped, stinky sausage fest of a boat. When the ninja's work is done and he takes off his mask, he retires to his penthouse suite and drinks champaigne with his beautiful harem.

Awesome points. Difficulty is definitely over hyped, ong with obscurity. Both arw great if they're used purposefully but exhausting if they're there for the sake of being there. I think what appeals to me most is the level of thought FromSoft puts into their environments. They give clues to the...

I'd like to read people's thoughts on this idea. Being a gamer, I get a lot of inspiration for storytelling from video games. Other than Closer Than We Thought, every story I'm posting here is heavily inspired by a specific game. I got to thinking about how Dark Souls stands out for its...
