My favorite symbol to use is the em dash (this:—), it is such a perfect tool for drawing out tension, a good tool to interject actions, giving a bit more emotion.

One of the more iffy series I had gotten into in the past is Dragon Raja, its a case where the author seem to be extremely malicious against the MC with all the love interests ending up with different guys, and the one girl who truly loved the MC ended up dead, his idol got erase from history, became a fugitive for a time, like five different factions want him dead.
