If it's not for me in the first chapter, I don't rate it. But I generally give 5 stars or no rating. I don't like the style of bullying authors by opening the first chapter for a glance to find an excuse to bash their rating.
@JayMark bad ratings aren't readers bullying authors; they're readers interacting with other readers. If reader A went "1 star because I hate overpowered MC" and reader B loved OP MC, then reader B is more likely to read a story despite the negative review.
It's better to establish a following elsewhere before taking on RR. The readers there think ratings reflect quality reality and the established writers have a hard-on to destroy the ratings of any competition they are able to. I wish bad ratings didn't deter readers, but they do very much.
Or just do your own thing like I do. You don't need others to get readers on RR. But you will likely get more bad ratings. My story dropped from 4.5 to 4.25 and will probably drop some more.
It's like a thing new writers must do to stay on rising stars, but if they swap with the wrong person they can get review bombed in exchange for a good rating with no recourse. This doesn't happen often though because it would discourage the review swap culture.
@Envylope Not saying you have to, saying its a big part of it, especially for writers challenging the most competitive styles there with no large following elsewhere. Anything is possible. I'm massively unpopular on RR and I dont review swap.
The reality is that writing is a very competitive industry. You will get discovered if you have a style and story readers enjoy. It will take a while, but it will happen. Doesn't help that a lot of people cheat. There is nepotism and shoutouts from popular authors...But if you are writing something that appeals to RR it will get found with time. Cheats basically speed up the process. Like buying an ad.
I did buy an ad on a RR, true story, I still have some left for when I start posting there again. Someone came into my comment section and scolded me for using an ad when my story is rated under 3 stars and obviously so bad they'd never bother to read it. I gave them the finger and proceeded to crash out. No regrets to this day.
It's not all bad. It produced a very cool theme for my story. I pulled through and kept writing. Then publishing on Scribble Hub helped save me from my RR depresions. Ya'll kept my spirits high and kept me writing. So I'm very grateful for here. Love ya'll.
