:meowsip: Being fair being a compliment feels funny. Culturally understandable, but funny regardless.

:blob_upset: Also, you are right about it being petty.

yeah, for some reason, in most Asian countries, people have obsession with being fair. ugh.... honestly it makes no sense but older generations mostly are very stubborn about it

:meowsip: It was here too, about 200 years ago. People were talking about the brown and the white race. The brown race being the rural population, and the white one the urban one.

:blob_hmm: So much for the topic of whiteness.

Racism. I hate it even as a joke.

:blob_hmm: Racism is a pretty interesting topic. Especially, when the fold lines run along ethical divisions. At least, that was the common and popular thought until well into the 50s. The idea of an English, Irish, Scottish, etc. race.

:blob_hmm: All of them as distinct separate entities with presumed qualities. The division between culture and biology was not yet all too strong. For many they were the same.

true... I remember there used to be this cream that was named 'fair and lovely' and literally ran super racist ads about a black girl turning fairer with each use and was penalized by the court to change it's name and now it's named 'glow and lovely'. They just made a new word for it... but the mindset remained the same
